Selucian tariffs on the Migrant Pass: Istalia protests

The Ministry of Economy is studying alternative routes: possible resumption of relations with Vanuku

ROMULA – The Istalian Government, through the Minister of Economy, National Industry and Trade, Gianluca Gori, who met the press yesterday moorning, expressed deep concern and firm opposition to the recent decision of the Government of Selucia to impose tariffs on the transit of commercial ships through the Migrant Pass, one of the main maritime hubs in the Western Hemisphere. The measure, according to the Minister, represents a dangerous obstacle to free international trade and risks triggering a domino effect capable of destabilizing maritime traffic throughout the region.

The Minister told the press:

Imposing tariffs on a vital hub such as the Migrant Pass means directly affecting the balance of international trade. We cannot accept that maritime transit becomes the object of political pressure. The conditions imposed by Selucia are unacceptable and are damaging not only to Istalia, but to all nations that depend on free and secure maritime trade. We sincerely hope that the Selucian government will reconsider its position.

However, if this does not happen, we do not rule out the possibility of engaging with other nations to coordinate a common response, especially here in the Sea of Lost Souls. This is a matter for the entire global trading system, not for one nation.

Already now, however, our Government is ready to protect the interests of Istalian companies: we are working on new directives for the sector and evaluating alternative routes, also with the possibility of fiscally incentivizing the routes via the east and through the Gran Canal of Vanuku.

The official statement of the Ministry, furthermore, underlined how the conditions imposed by Selucia are not very transparent and are more like a coercive lever to push neighboring countries to join an international organization clearly designed to protect the interests of its founding nations, a reference, not too veiled, to the 3Point Federation, one of the many tools deployed by the then Beiteynu government to favor its agenda of global hegemony, as many exponents of Istalian politics have always seen the organization, both under the Socialist Republic and then under the Imperial State. With the dissolution of the Beiteynese state and a significant reduction in the international activity of Narikaton & Darnussia, now it's Selucia today that seeks to expand its sphere of influence in the region exploiting the today declining organization born on the Migran Accords.

In response, in the immediate, as expressed by the Minister, the Istalian Government announced the launch of a plan to review the directives for the maritime trade sector. In particular, the possibility of "strongly advising against" the passage of Istalian ships through the Migrant Pass is being evaluated, encouraging instead longer but alternative eastern routes, and therefore encouraging the use of the passage through the Gran Canal of Vanuku. To mitigate the economic impact of such a change, the Minister, as already reported, announced that tax breaks for shipping companies are being studied, aimed at compensating for the increase in costs related to fuel consumption and longer navigation times.

Particularly significant is the opening of the Saragat Government towards Vanuku, with which Istalia has had minimal relations since the end of the Peninsula War and the fall of the communist regime. Preliminary contacts have already been initiated to ensure favorable conditions for commercial transit through the Grand Canal, now considered by many analysts to be the only real strategic alternative to the Migrant Pass.

Internal political reactions were not long in coming. While some parliamentary forces have appreciated the Government's pragmatic approach, the center-right opposition has harshly criticized the idea of re-establishing relations with a country governed by a left-wing dictatorship, calling the move an ideological surrender for the country by the Democratic Socialists who wink at similar regimes.

The government's response was not long in coming and in a note released yesterday evening, Antinori Palace responded harshly:

It is amusing that today a pragmatic approach to international relations is being contested, when for years right-wing governments have initiated dialogue and established close ties with states with governments that have very different ideological bases from our democratic system. Saragat government is simply following the same political realism that characterized the long years of Floria Monaldi's rule.

It now remains to be seen how the diplomatic negotiations will evolve and whether Selucia intends to review its position. In the meantime, the Istalian maritime industry is watching with attention, and growing concern, the future developments of the affair.
