Sérgio Bastos, Political commentator at Espelho - Ladies and gentleman. After decades of authoritarian rule and months of anxiety, we have finally come together to discuss the results of our first truly democratic election in centuries. I am your host Sérgio Bastos and i am here with political commentator Daniela Varela and former spokesperson for the democratic movement, Afonso Florencio. In just a few minutes time, we will be discussing the results of the newly created Chamber of Deputies, which will be the first results coming in tonight. What do you expect from these results Daniela? "Personally i think the electorate will move towards parites that stand in oppossition to the left-leaning ideology of the former regime. We should pay special attention to a party like the Popular Democratic Party, which has strong roots in the country and is known for organizing anti government actions for the last few decades, albeit underground."
 
Thank you Daniela and, as im hearing from our election desk, the results are coming in. Let me be clear that these are prelimenary results, based on around 80% of votes counted. Here we go. Looking at the exit poll, we declare the Popular Democratic Party the clear winner in the Chamber of deputies, winning a virtual 100 seats in the 150 seat chamber which is a blowout and would secure them a absolute majority. A close second seems to be the "Party of Roses", which many Tukaralians have started to call "Rosa" in the last few weeks of this campaign. But there is some minor parties that will seemingly get representation in the lower chamber. Florencio, could you take us through these parties? "For sure Bastos. The most notable of the smaller parties is the Movimento Democrático Verde, a green political party that would receive 12 seats based on this exit poll. They campaigned hard on a pragmatic platform, which has seemingly been noticed by the voters. The Partido Radical is maybe one of the biggest suprises tonight. The far-left party consists of many pardoned members of the former regime, who hoped to maintain some power in this new democratic government. Their attempt has failed, with just 4 seats in this exit poll."

As we discuss the first look on the new chamber of deputies, we just got news that the presidential election has been called by the National Electoral Board. With nearly 67% of the vote, Alex Caetano has been elected President of the Republic. The PDP candidate, a huge voice during the protests against the regime, managed to win in the first round. If he had failed to secure a majority, a second round would have been held. This result marks the absolute best outcome for the center-right PDP, which has obliterated its oppossition. 



As we move deeper into this election night, at least 98% of votes for the parliamentary election have been counted and we are here to make our final prediction. With nearly 49% of the popular vote, the PDP has secured a majority, winning 81 seats in the chamber and thus being able to form its own majority government. Here are the detailed results per constituency:



Daniela, what is your take of this final result? "Well Sérgio, while less of a blowout then was shown at the beginning of this night, it is still a remarkable succes and secures absolute power of the party that fought so long for democracy in Tukarali. With the presidency and the chamber of deputies under their control, the entire executive is guarenteed to be in PDP hands. While the senate is to be appointed next week after provincial governments have formed, i truly think that the PDP will be able to use the coming 4 years to transform this country. There is much work to be done."  Any response to that Alfonso? "I think Daniela is right, although i wouldnt count out the main oppossition party Rosa. It consists of many labour leaders that oppossed the former regime, as well as former exiles that formed this center-left movement. I think they have a responsibility to shape the oppossition in this new democracy, a role that might be as important as that of the new to be installed government." Thank you both.
