PM Prasert: "Still as Strong as an Ox"

Udon Nakhon – Prime Minister Prasert Thanomchai (PA-UCF) was hospitalized earlier this month due to a respiratory infection, raising concern about the 77-year-old elder statesman's capacity to lead South Dovani's fractious minority coalition government. Appearing at the National Assembly this morning, however, PM Prasert appeared unbowed by the rumours swirling around his fitness for office, delivering a performance that was equal parts bravado and theatre.

"I am still as strong as an ox," declared the Prime Minister while flexing his biceps and encouraging reporters to feel his arms. "I've got the mind and body of a much younger man, just ask my wife."

Leaving aside concerns regarding the prime minister's health, the minority government he leads has experienced turbulence as of late. Since taking office in 5631, the Prime Minister has led an uneasy alliance supported by a patchwork of confidence-and-supply agreements, most notably with the United Communities Party (UCP) and the Civic Alliance (CA). Both parties are now threatening to withdraw their support, citing unmet policy commitments and accusations of backsliding. 

To appease the CA, Prasert agreed in 5632 to the establishment of the Independent Anti-Corruption Agency (IACA), a watchdog body aimed at restoring public trust after allegations of endemic graft contributed to the decline of the New Elephant Worker's Party (NEWP). However, critics argue that the agency has been effectively kneecapped by a nearly 50% funding cut in Finance Minister Vitaya Kongsangchai’s latest budget proposal, a move the CA describes as a “deliberate sabotage” of the institutional reform they sought to achieve through supporting the government.

Meanwhile, the UCP’s support was contingent on the formal recognition of minority language rights. While Prasert’s cabinet has issued non-binding directives promoting the use of local languages in education and public signage, and modestly expanded funding for multilingual education programs, the UCP insists these gestures fall short of the legally binding recognition they were promised. The UCP has warned that failure to make meaningful progress on minority rights could further inflame tensions underlying the insurgencies in the eastern provinces, such as that led by the Sumanese Liberation Front (SLF), which has waged a low-level rebellion against the central government for nearly a century.

On the issue of language rights, Prasert has had to walk a careful line. His government’s survival also depends on parliamentary support from ultranationalist parties like the Hanzen Heritage Party (PA–HHP) and the Strong Nation Party (SNP), both of which fiercely oppose any "dilution" of Hanzenese national culture. These factions have framed the language rights debate as an existential threat to national unity, a narrative that plays well with their base but undermines reconciliation efforts in the periphery.

Despite these mounting pressures, as well as the concerns about his health, the Prime Minister remained upbeat, declaring that his government will complete its term. On his side are recent polls suggesting that the PM and his government enjoy relatively strong approval from the electorate, despite the occasional legislative deadlock.

Udon Nakhon – A decade after its enactment, South Dovani’s National Economic Renewal Initiative (NERI) has significantly reshaped the country's economy, transitioning it from a state-controlled system to a dynamic market-driven economy. The NERI, launched in 5627 under Finance Minister Vitaya Kongsangchai (PIE), sought to privatize approximately 70% of state-owned enterprises (SOEs), revitalizing key sectors and boosting private sector participation. The implementation of Vitaya's privatization scheme has accelerated dramatically under the PA-led coalition government, as opposed to the previous NEWP-PIE left-wing coalition, with the sell-off of state assets expected to be completed by 5636.

The shift toward a market economy has driven economic growth, with GDP growth averaging 5.2% annually over the past five years. Over the same period, exports have increased significantly, particularly in agricultural products, textiles, and rare gemstones, while domestic consumption remains robust and prices remain relatively stable. The private sector has taken the lead in generating employment, while the government has focused on investing privatization proceeds into infrastructure and social welfare programs. This "soft shock treatment" approach has been praised by South Dovani's business leaders, as well as some labour unions. 

While public sentiment has broadly coalesced around the idea that a "rising tide lifts all boats," a growing concern among economists has been the increasing concentration of economic power among a small number of elite families, many of whom leveraged early access to privatized assets to build sprawling holding companies and conglomerates. The rapid pace of NERI-era privatizations, combined with limited antitrust enforcement, created fertile ground for the rise of these massive family-owned enterprises. Some analysts have raised the alarm over the potential of such concentrated economic power to cause market distortion, weakened competition, and state capture. While the Commerce Minister Thanawat Suksabaijai (PIE) has floated new competition laws to address the issue, some critics argue that the government's reliance on these conglomerates for political financing and economic stability makes meaningful reform unlikely in the near term, while others note the potentially negative economic fallout of attacking the country's most successful employers.
