With the support of five parties, the criminalization and banning of animal cruelty officially becomes law after many years of discussion on the issue.

More specifically, the new legislation recognizes all animals on the planet as sentient beings, creatures with a soul, capable of feeling pain and emotions—who must be given proper care and legal protection..It is worth noting that the bill explicitly bans the exploitation of animals for entertainment purposes. Every circus operating in the country that includes animals in its program will receive a fine of 100,000 WAN and up to 7 years of imprisonment. Furthermore, it will be forbidden to use animals in the production of cosmetic products, medicine, and in their exploitation for clothing production, e.g. leather, fur.

Perhaps one of the most extreme articles of the bill is that all companies, whether local or foreign, are required to have a legal compatibility certificate, which will certify that each company does not use animals for its benefit. Any company, local or foreign, that does not comply with the legislation will be included in the “Blacklist” and will have its business license revoked (including fines and possible imprisonment).

Regarding education, the bill provides for the mandatory teaching of all students about animal rights, environmental protection, and the sustainability of endangered species. Teachers will be required to attend special seminars for their further training on this topic. Also, every school in the country will have a vegetable garden where children will be able to learn to grow their food and honor their ancestors. Additionally, new trees will be planted, and specially designed spaces will be created for the protection of rare plants and flowers. I wish I were a student…

However, regarding the debate in parliament, great unrest arose after the intervention of a Fileleftheroi Party MP, who stated:

Just the fact that you sit and write such foolish bills, gentlemen of the government, shows the common people the level of your thinking. What else are we going to see in this country? Passports for animals?
