Hutorian Parliament Passes Senate Reintroduction Amendment

In a massive move the Parliament of Hutori has spearheaded a substantial Constitutional Amendment that introduces an Upper Chamber to the Parliament of Hutori, bringing back the National Senate to Hutorian politics and the impact on future elections can not be understated. While the Hutorian House of Commons (now the Lower Chamber of Parliament) will continue to be elected by a riding by riding and First Past the Post System, and the amount of MPs to change based on population changes every 20 years, the National Senate will be 72 seats, with 12 Senators elected from each province. Unlike MPs who require a plurality of the votes in their riding, the Senators will be selected from Party lists, and will be elected based on the vote share of the party within the province, providing a modified version of Proportional Representation to elect them.
This has already sent shockwaves through the Parties, who are now scrambling to plan a co-current Senate election campaign even as they fight over Hutori's 343 Ridings across the nation. Political analysts say if any single item will secure Prime Minister Woodbury's legacy, win or lose in the next election, this will be sit.
The National Senate will not have the ability to veto down budget bills or Confidence Bills from the House, but outside of that Senators are being given wide powers as a chamber of Sober Second Thought, to deliberate on all other forms of legislation that could pass.
Conservatives pull off the unthinkable and deliver a Balanced Budget

Despite the post war strain of paying for the Second Kundrati War, and the economic stimulus that went with it, Prime Minister Rosalyn Woodbury's Conservatives government have delivered their fourth balanced budget. Finance Minister Tasha Ulrich hasn't posted a single deficit since their first budget in April of 5635. Opposition Leader Rachel McKenna's National Labour and the Republicans were the only parties who voted against the budget. When questioned Liberal Leader Jack Delamont stated "The budget wasn't perfect, but it delivered for veterans, for the economy, and increased spending in critical areas. Even Green Party Leader Jason LeClerc praised the budget to reducing some military spending, and that the investments made into green technology and the transition were "What Hutori needs at this time."
Rachel McKenna Resigned as National Labour Leader and Leader of the Official Opposition

Despite having put off her post election review, and the National Labour General Annual Meeting for over a year, Rachel McKenna had to face the membership at some point and the results weren't kind. Although she cleared the 50% threshold required to technically remain as Leader, the vote for her continued support amongst the member was 56.1% to 43.9%. Following the meeting she stated "She could not in good faith remain as Leader when over two in five members did not want to follow her." McKenna stated she would remain on as Interim Leader of the National Labour Party and Leader of the Official Opposition until a new Leader could be elected not wanting to "allow the Woodbury Conservatives to not be held accountable."

Roccato Premier Evelyn Markham has beaten off three challengers to become the top dog of the National Labour Party. The three term Premier of Roccato, defeated Deputy Leader Liam Eddington (MP for Kincardine East) Richard Carrol (MP for Axminister New Orange) and Lisa Harris (MP for Dalry Centre). The Premier thanked her supporters, after she was declared the winner on the second ballot. Premier Markham stated she would not resign as Premier until the end of her term. As she does not have a seat in Parliament, she did tap current Deputy Leader Liam Eddington to remain on as Deputy Leader, and he will take the reins as the Leader of the Official Opposition until the end of the current term. It's rumored that Premier Markham will seek the federal seat for the seat of Roccato Straits, part of the riding she represents as the Premier.

All five political parties are attempting to set up some big names for Senate recruitment, including a number of star candidates. Former National Labour Leader and Leader of the Official Opposition Rachel Mckenna has formally been nominated as one of the twelve Senate candidates in the province of Roccato. She remains a backbencher in the National Labour caucus, with some accusing her of using her parliamentary office to seek higher office, something a spokesperson for McKenna dismissed as "a political smear campaign." The Liberals have also recruited an extreme star candidate in former Liberal Prime Minister Michael Kensington has been acclaimed as Liberal candidate for Senate in his home province of Kenai. While Kensington remains a controversial and polarizing figure nationally, he has continued appeal in his home province and deep donor network that sources close to Liberal Leader Jack Delamont, will pay dividends, even if privately, the Liberal Leader doesn't want Kensington anywhere the ballot, with fears of being outshone. The Conservatives also recruited a former Prime Minister, Robert Calloway, who has agreed to stand for nomination in his home province of Adelia. Former Prime Minister Calloway has mostly stayed out of the spotlight since he left office in 5633, but is still considered a heavyweight amongst Conservative circles. It's rumored that Prime Minister Rosalyn Woodbury personally asked him to run, though sources close to both deny any contact between the two outside of social circles and fundraisers.
