Sumalani’s coalition government secures slim majority

Alamzeb Sumalani’s coalition government appears set to remain in power after winning the first set of legislative elections under Solentia’s new constitution. Sumalani’s four-party coalition won 102 of 200 seats in the unicameral Federal Assembly, providing the government with a majority of only four seats. Fazilat, the political alliance headed by Sumalani, is the largest party in the new legislature.
The newly formed Federal Assembly has fewer seats than the special constitutional assembly elected two years ago, and these elections were held under a different voting system. As a consequence, it is difficult to make direct comparisons between the results of the two elections. When considered altogether though, the results suggest continuity.
The two largest parties in the governing coalition, Fazilat and the Justice and Democracy Party, lost between 32 and 23 seats respectively. Despite losing a handful of seats, the Social Democratic and Labour Party established themselves as the principal opposition to the government by becoming the second largest party in the legislature.
Fortunately for the coalition government, the National Peasants and Workers' Movement experienced a significant jump in their vote share. The impressive performance has been linked to the personal appeal of their young leader Tofan Faqir, as well as the party’s successful lobbying for a new programme of subsidises for Solentian farmers.
Sumalani has promised to deliver a “national renaissance” with the electoral mandate delivered by to the coalition government. In spite of his rhetoric, the short term prospects for the Solentian economy remain dismal. After a period of relative boom following the collapse of the Noorani regime, economic growth has stalled and inflation has reappeared.
