"We have the opportunity to force Nowik's hand and we shouldn't waste it" says Pietrzyskist newly elected PKW leader

After leading the Communist Party of Valruzia for fourteen years, Marshall of Kampania Tobiasz Bernas was defeated yesterday during the party's leadership primaries by its main contender, the Mayor of Szary Kamień - Kampanian capital city - by a 0.4% margin. The unexpected result, showing Mirski getting a 43.6% against Bernas 43.2% (with minor candidates getting the rest of percentage as 7.1% and 6.1% respectively) pointed at the tensions surrounding the two cores of the Communist Party since the defeat in the 5641 Valruzian presidential elections.

Mirski, considered a close ally of former President Karolina Pietrzyk, ran on a more pragmatic platform, and opposed Bernas' decision of staying out of the Nowik cabinet and giving away the "opportunity to change things from the inside". According to internal sources, while Mirski belongs to the more Pietrzyk-aligned faction of the party, he is more tough in negotiations than Bernas, and will probably demand more concessions from Nowik than the previous leader did before.

Mirski, despite being relatively unknown in nationwide territory, is a pretty popular politician in his hometown of Szary Kamien. Elected as mayor of the city two terms ago, he is especially popular among the young population due to his charisma and use of social networks. Now, he might be the first Valruzian politician to rivalize with Szymon Nowik's appeal to attempt to win voters over.

"Mirski has done a great job as mayor of Szary Kamien"

says political analyst Nieva Rodowska.

"However, ruling a whole party and appealing to a wider population is a much more complicated issue, and his lack of experience in that field will have to be filled in a short time, with elections looming in less than two years from now. Mirski's hometown popularity doesn't guarantee him national success".

For the moment, Chancellor Nowik has already congratulated Mirski for his election as new leader of the KPW, and both leaders are expected to meet this morning to discuss the SW-PKW relationship and the government agreements between both parties. According to some sources, it's highly likely that the PKW leader will request the Chancellor either to give them some ministries or to push for more ambitious policies, yet to be disclosed. Nowik's government relies heavily on the KPW support, since despite having 230 out of the 601-seat Sejm, the KPW's second position and 20% is not a force to be underestimated. 

The election of Lucjan Mirski is in some way a revenge of those closer to former President Pietrzyk, after their 5641 presidential candidate - Marshall of the Sejm Tatjana Borkowska - was pushed aside by Tobiasz Bernas, who proposed instead national deputy Marceli Pyzik and which got 19.2% of the vote - down from the 25.7% and 52.2% achieved by Pietrzyk in first round in the first two presidential elections - and failing to reach the 2nd round for the first time.

One of the biggest differences between Mirski and Bernas - who will remain as Marshall of Kampania and will likely be the party's candidate in the region - is his more internationalist approach, getting a differentiation among the other big Valruzian parties.

"While all the other main parties - the members of the Forward Valruzia coalition, Valruzian Alliance and especially Sovereign Valruzia - are heavily isolationist or rather hold nationalistic tendencies and prefer not to heavily rely on third nations, the KPW now under Mirski's leadership could see a swift from Bernas' also isolationist tendencies. Mirski belongs to the Pietrzykist faction of the Communist Party of Valruzia, a branch much more open to negotiations with other nations, especially in Seleya, such as Baltusia, Kalistan or Tukarali, in regards to multilateral agreements or collaborations. In the current situation of the continent, Nowik might be forced to accept the KPW conditions if he wants to keep his government in place."
