The secular front rises up against the Giunio government

Protests across the country against the interference of the Aurorian Church in the institutions: a cross-party front accuses the executive of threatening the secularity of the State.

“Hands off the secularity of the State!” is the slogan that echoed yesterday in the streets of Romula, Milona, Pontelasa, Burìa and in the other main Istalian cities. Thousands of citizens, activists, unions and simple supporters have joined together in an unprecedented mobilization, promoted by a progressive front that is increasingly more alarmed: the New Communist Party, the Democratic Socialist Party, the Green Movement, but also numerous representatives of the Alliance of Autonomies and Democracy & Freedom have taken to the streets to denounce what they define as a dangerous clerical drift.

At the center of the protests are the recent legislative proposals of the Giunio government, which according to the protesters explicitly strengthen the role and influence of the Aurorian Church within the institutions. After the interventions in the fiscal, educational and welfare fields, already harshly criticized, the measure seemed enough for many sectors of civil society concerned about the dramatic growth of the Church's influence in the country.

A PSD parliamentarian, questioned by the press while participating in the Milona march, declared:

Istalia cannot go back centuries. We are risking a progressive dismantling of the secular principles on which our nation is founded.

The accusations focus in particular on the Hosian Democratic Union, defined bluntly as “the political arm of the Aurorian Church”. A formation that, according to many, has led the National Liberal Party to a "political amnesia" on its historical roots due to pure political connivance, and the leader of the PNC, Rossella Moscardini, did not fail to underline it:

It is a betrayal of the secular and progressive legacy that has made Istalia an international model of tolerance and secularism! It is a regression disguised as reformism and the PNL is especially to blame, having bowed to the diktats of the UOD!

Even within Democracy & Freedom the mobilization found space: numerous parliamentarians and supporters of the party took part in the demonstrations, although the leadership chose not to take an official position. The management left freedom of choice to its representatives, aware that the priority of the movement remains support for the economic and fiscal reforms promoted by the government, which would continue in any case even without the formal assent of D&L. Moreover, the party is interested in consolidating the image of a responsible and reliable force in view of future alliances or possible participation in future executives.

It is not just a protest, but a real cultural battle, involving universities, civic associations, editorial offices and local communities. In the coming days, new mobilizations, conferences and artistic initiatives have already been announced to raise public awareness and claim the full independence of the State from the Church.
