Built on the remains of a glorious past, the new multidisciplinary center represents a further major milestone: Istalia ready to climb at the top of advanced scientific research

INGONA - With the official start of operations of the National Center for Nuclear Research, Istalia takes a decisive step forward on its path to scientific new hights. The ambitious facility, destined to become one of the cornerstones of nuclear and technological research for Istalia, and surely a center of reference worldwide, was conceived under the second Saragat government, meeting the growing pressure of the Istalian academic world that had long been clamoring for a strategic investment in this field.
The site chosen for the new center could only be steeped in history: the old National Laboratory for Inertial Confinement Fusion, on the southern slopes of the Alkhayl, not far from Ingona. An emblematic place, which saw the light even before the foundation of the First Istalian Empire, when it was inaugurated by Michele Appiano De Borromei, then Head of the State of the Fifth Republic and future first Emperor of the Istalians.
Until the early years of the Seventh Republic, the laboratory was one of the most advanced research centers in the world. With the political and economic decline of the country, the center also suffered a long period of abandonment, interrupted only during the Socialist Republic, which tried to relaunch its scientific activities. But it was the Peninsula War that decreed its definitive dismisal: the most sensitive equipment was quickly evacuated, while the structures were severely damaged by the conflict. It remained like this for over a decade, until the decision was made to recover and transform the area into a new national excellence.
The result is a modern and multifunctional complex, where the historic installation for inertial confinement fusion has been completely rebuilt, from the Target Room to the laser amplifiers, and flanked by new highly specialized environments. Next to it, there are now the Nuclear Technology Research & Development Laboratory, dedicated to experimentation on technologies for fission reactors, and the Laboratory for Applied Nuclear Technologies, where nuclear applications will be developed in fields ranging from medicine to the materials industry.
Large sections of the center have been reserved for public and private entities for testing and research, with cutting-edge infrastructure. In the coming months, an electron synchrotron for the generation of synchrotron radiation and a free electron laser will also be installed, essential tools for a vast range of research in fields such as protein crystallography, earth science, paleontology, chemistry and physics.
Under the authority of the Committee for Nuclear Research, part of the National Council for Scientific Research, the Center is only one of the advanced research centers about to be inaugurated: the National Center for Nuclear and Particle Physics, in Nuxene (south of Nicoma), is expected to be operational within a couple of years: it will host an electron-positron accelerator for the study of CP symmetry, strong interactions and elementary particles, as well as a linear accelerator dedicated to high-energy physics and the generation of synchrotron radiation. Several universities and research institutions, first of all the University of Caleon, have also expressed their will to promote the construction in the site also of an experimental fusion devices, probably based on the stellarator architecture, given the growing interest of the research in this field by prominent researchers of the University of Caleon itself.
No less important will be the National Astroparticle and Cosmology Laboratory, recently approved and funded by the Moretti Government, in collaboration with AISA and the National Agency for Observatories. The laboratory will bring together theorists, observers and experimenters working in the fields of high-energy astrophysics, cosmology, gravity and neutrino physics.
In this context, Istalia is finally realizing its ambitions to return to being one of the most prestigious scientific centers in the world. Universities, research centers and individual scientists are receiving modern infrastructures and cutting-edge technologies. But not only that: the country is also preparing to welcome foreign researchers, attracted by a rapidly expanding national scientific network and by working and collaboration conditions that aim for excellence.
