Former Valruzian President Karolina Pietrzyk, a foundational figure in the country's modern democratic history and the first woman to serve as head of state, has died today at the age of 74. Her family confirmed she passed away "peacefully" following a long battle with cancer. Pietrzyk, who served as President from 5629 to 5641 and was a key leading player in Valruzia’s post-authoritarian transition, leaves behind a huge legacy for many Valruzians.
Born on 12 April 5582 in the industrial Voivodeship of Kampania, Pietrzyk came from a low-income background and was the youngest of three siblings. Her early life was shaped by the repression under the Morawski regime, where which she was one of the last women permitted to study law before female access to legal education was restricted. During his early twenties, she was twice arrested for participating in the 5623–5624 anti-regime protests — experiences that would deeply influence her later political views.
Following the fall of the dictatorship, Pietrzyk co-founded the Communist Party of Valruzia (KPW) and was elected to the Constitutional Sejm in the landmark 5626 election. There, she played a central role in fighting to enshrine workers' rights and the principle of State intervention in the economy within the new Constitution, a feat that would always be celebrated as part of her legacy. Her courage came to national attention during the 5627 Valruzian coup attempt, when she was one of only four deputies who refused to comply with the orders of the coup’s leader, Lt. Strzele, of lying on the floor, instead choosing to remain standing. That single act of defiance cemented her reputation as a symbol of democratic resistance and the will of the Valruzian people of not wanting to go backwards, and would further solidify the image of the Communist Party of Valruzia as a "party for the fighters".
In the 5629 presidential election, Pietrzyk shocked the establishment by finishing first in the initial round and went on to defeat centre-right candidate Bernard Łukaszewski with 58% of the vote. Her campaign, relying on issues such as economic democracy, gender equality, and institutional safeguards against authoritarianism, helped her making this surprising feat, paired with the popularity she had already gained following the attempted coup. Upon taking office, she became Valruzia’s first female president, first communist head of state, and the youngest ever to assume the presidency, aged 47.
Her first presidency was marked by the consolidation of Valruzia’s democratic institutions, the drafting and ratification of the new Constitution — whose preamble she personally authored as one of her very first acts — and the implementation of ambitious social and economic reforms under her sight, hand by hand with Chancellor Szymon Nowik, with whome she was personally close. Her presidency oversaw diplomatic expansion, with Xsampa being the very first nation to be visited by the Valruzian head of State post-dictatorship, and strengthened worker participation in corporate governance.
Pietrzyk was reelected in 5635 with an outright majority in the first round, the first and only time to happen in modern Valruzian politics, though her second term was less politically active — with one of her most important acts being the participation in Tukarese transition to democracy — and in 5640, she announced she would not seek a third term after being diagnosed with breast cancer . She formally withdrew from public life to focus on treatment, expressing hope that her retreat would be "temporary", something that, in the end, couldn't be done. According to people close to her, she would always regret not being able to come back to political life and fulfill her desire of being Marshall of Kampania, his home region.
While she never returned to political office, Karolina Pietrzyk remained a highly respected figure across the political spectrum — admired by supporters for her unwavering principles and her political stances, and even by critics for her role in fighting to preserve the constitutional order during one of Valruzia’s most fragile moments.

She is survived by her partner, two children, and countless admirers who viewed her as a pillar of the modern Valruzian republic. The official funeral is expected to be celebrated within the following days, with mandataries around Seleya and Terra being invited. Figures across the Valruzian political spectrum have been sending their condolences throoughout the whole morning, with many more expected to come.
