ROMULA - The announcement came as no surprise: Indead, it was expected: the first head after the events of Torre d''o Sulento has rolled. The Minister of Internal Affairs and Public Order, Fiorenzo Verdini, a prominent member of the National Liberal Party, has resigned following the clashes and incidents of violence that occurred in Torre d'o Sulento during the general strike. The second minister to resign from this third Giunio Government in less than 2 years, a decision that was inevitable for many, as mentioned, but one that has nonetheless sparked new controversy and fractures within the majority.
The PNL has not minced its words in denouncing what it considers a political surrender to external pressure. In a statement released late yesterday evening, numerous party members openly spoke of a "scapegoat sacrificed on the altar of political expediency" emphasizing how Verdini had repeatedly warned the Stat Council of the need to strengthen the police force's staffing and resources. This appeal was consistently blocked by cross-vetoes from the government partners Democray & Freedom and the Liberal Republicans.
But the criticisms don't stop at Verdini's treatment. Minister-Secretary of State Valeriano Giunio, leader of the PNL, has also come under fire by part of members of his party, accused of having given in, without reacting or even attempting to defend Verdini, to calls for his resignation from unions, the opposition, the public, allies, and even the military. Many, both within and outside the coalition, now speak of a government at the mercy of events, incapable of managing internal tensions and growing external pressure.
But Verdini may not be the only one to fall: the Torre d''o Sulento Prosecutor's Office has opened a case targeting not only the city's and national leadership of the State Police, but also the Prefect, the City Council, and, surprisingly, even the Municipal Police. The alleged crime is abuse of power and excessive use of force, with particular reference to the controversial raid on the Alfeo Cantiani High School, which continues to spark public outrage. In addition to the incidents within the school, the Prosecutor's Office accuses the Prefect and the municipal administration of serious responsibilities in organizing the security apparatus and other serious failings in the management of public order.
Meanwhile, in the city, those affected by property damage during the clashes, business owners, residents, and small business owners, are demanding justice and the opening of a specific case for compensation for damages, in a Torre d'o Sulento that spent the holidays as a wounded and deeply divided city.
But the crisis isn't limited to the political and social sphere: internal tensions are now compounded by growing economic concerns, fueled by the effects of the conflict in Rildanor. The war in southeastern Seleya continues to destabilize maritime traffic in the Southern Seas, and despite the emergency measures enacted by the government, trade volumes are declining. Just a few months ago, Istalia signed a major trade agreement with the countries on the eastern coast of Northern Seleya, fueling optimism among businesses and investors. Now, however, the conflict in Rildanor and the resulting decline in maritime traffic are jeopardizing those prospects, with routes dwindling and capital beginning to look elsewhere. Internal political uncertainty, combined with the perception of a weak government, is also undermining confidence in domestic markets.
Meanwhile, within the coalition, the atmosphere is becoming increasingly tense, and cross-accusations are mounting: D&L and PRL are accusing, once again, PNL and the Hosian Democrats of transformism and forced impositions; the latter accuse the former of paralyzing the government's action with cuts and obstructionism. Everyone, however, is now pointing the finger at Valeriano Giunio, considered, probably for the first time in his long political career, as uncertain, lacking a clear political line, and too focused on internal power relations to offer effective leadership.
Faced with a fraying majority and an increasingly struggling executive, the opposition has risen up in unison, firmly demanding the government's immediate resignation. Two ministers already out of office, a coalition that exists only on paper, legislative activity that is inconsistent and lacking a clear direction: in the eyes of the opposition, the Giunio government has exhausted all political legitimacy. The country is gripped by social tensions and increasingly evident economic and institutional crises, and the executive, the minority forces accuse, is proving incapable not only of offering solutions, but even of understanding their scope.
The Defense General Staff has also once again expressed serious concerns. Another joint statement signed by the Parliamentary coordinators of the Armed Forces from all parties emphasizes "the botched management of the crisis" and calls for "immediate clarification on national security plans".
Further demonstrating the gravity of the situation was the sudden return to Romula of His Majesty the Emperor. Accustomed now for several years to spending the summer months in the tranquility of the Villa degli Aranci in Pontelasa, on the advice of his doctors to benefit from the seaside climate, the Sovereign had left the capital in mid-November. His decision to cut short his summer stay and urgently return to the Capital can only be interpreted as a signal of maximum institutional alert.
5662 opens, therefore, under dark clouds for the Giunio government and the third mandate of the National Liberal leader now appears increasingly uncertain. And while many political circles are rumouring about other imminent resignations, some are already betting on how long this government will last.
