Riksdag Committee of Culture Has Approved Motion to Restore Historical Names Throughout the Country

Historical curiosity has been on a steady rise throughout many parts of Davostag, specifically curiosity on the old imperial period and the Kivonian period. This has resulted in various cultural organizations, both small and large, forming around preservation, research and more importantly restoration. Many point out that one of the key issues Julia Neusohn (president between 5442–5446, 5448–5467) sought to solve was the restoration of historical names of cities, towns, villages, regions, streets, etc. However, due to the Kirlawan Conflict and a focus on economic issues, led her to postpone such arrangements. And with that historical restorationism was overlooked. But as figures such as Greta Greger and others have brought vitality into the national idea for a few decades now, the idea to restore the long lost names of history has become more popular these days. For example, during the now condemned Republic of Davostan and subsequent Federation of Davostan-Kivonia, a naming reform took place to "democratize" and get rid of centuries-old names of cities and regions. With the rise of the Third Republic, some older names such as Fort Reinhardt, Vermillion and Saint Erwinsburg were restored, while newer Kivonianized names were given to other places.
 
The Riksdag Committee of Culture was tasked by premier Riddercrantz in 5656 to begin investigating the issue and see if there is substantial support for changing some names across the country. Now as the Committee has brought a list of names, revised to fit modern linguistics, with local support, the State Council has approved of the list and the Committee has voted on it to be implemented next month. The reason for why the entire Riksdag was not tasked with voting it through is because they only meet twice a year, delegating legislative authority to the parliamentary committees instead.

– Län (counties):
Långsund Län ---> Sellend Län (Note: Taken from the old name for the city of Långstad, Fort St. Celendius, located in Långsund.)
Fladmark Län ---> Varratå Län (Note: Taken from the old name for the city of Fladborg, Varrato, located in Fladmark.)
Lagfast Län ---> Desara Län (Note: Taken from the old name for the city of Vermillion, Desharyy, located in Lagfast.)
Nyberg Län ---> Darland Län (Note: Taken from the old name for the city of Nyberg, Daurin, located in Nyberg Län, the name of the island of Nyberg is also changed to Darland.)
Møllerfors Län ---> Sensara Län (Note: Taken from the old name for the city of Saint Erwinsburg, Zenesharyy, located in Møllerfors.)
 
– Städer (cities):
Engelshøj ---> Joensvik (Note: Taken from the old name for the city of Engelshøj, St. John.)
Knivby ---> Tullgansa (Note: Taken from the old name for the city of Knivby, Tulganzar.)
Ballenhus ---> Korkallen (Note: Taken from the old name for the city of Ballenhus, Qorqal.)
 
The Committee has ruled in its motion that härader (municipalities) are allowed, under the supervision of the Committee of Culture, to rename streets and squares to fit into revivalist themes until March 5665. After which citizen initiatives need to be petitioned to the Häradsting (municipal councils) and approved by the Riksdag Committee of Culture. One example of a street renaming, is one of the most central streets in the city of Fort Reinhardt, previously known as Borglångvägen, and now known as Temkalavägen. Named after the old name for the city, Temirqal, and on an even more historic note after the Battle of Temirqal, the aftermath of which made the government change the city's name after August Reinhardt in his honor of victory.
