Energetic new centre-right party leads the opposition to its best result in 15 years

GEMUN: It has been 15 years since the right-of-centre opposition had somewhat good results against the raging socialist machina, led by the Alliance of Three, also known as the Democratic People's Coalition. And many had questioned the ever-decreasing election results and representation of the opposition forces in Yuan being led by the DPC, and thus, back in September 5661, leaders of the three major parties, including one northern regionalist one, announced that all four of them would be merging into a new united party, which they would later call Democratic People's Party, led by then-leader of Bianjie Democratic Action, Oboi Dolok.

Energised by the new and fresh blood within the party ranks, new faces and a new programme, the new DPP started to grow in popularity, both in terms of membership and polling. The fatigue from the fifteen-year rule of Abatai Soca began to feel amongst the citizens, voters and, evidently, the Socialist People's Party itself, as Premier Soca had announced a year and a half prior that he would not seek a fourth term, citing health and age concerns, as the leader of socialists would be 90 by the end of 5663-68 years, if re-elected. SPP leadership election in June last year has resulted in the mayor of Gemun, Ajigen Kode, being elected as the new leader to steer the party for the new election in 5663. The same year, Kode, as the new leader, negotiated with the New Dawn party, which was the second junior partner in the previous Soca and Jalar governments, but lost Yuan official party status after it fell below the threshold in the last election. Socialists convinced New Dawn to merge into them, citing "the need to unite in the close and contested electoral system". Many within the party protested that decision, leaving the party, defecting to the PCP or creating a new one; however, those attempts have been rather useless and dead on arrival.

Leading up to the election in April, it was increasingly evident that the Socialist-Communist coalition may face a challenge from the opposition parties, with increasing chances of losing the majority overall. For the first time in a long time, the Socialists were leading the closest opponent by less than 10 points, while the PCP was losing support equally, but remained the third largest party. However, once the first preliminary results were announced, it was certain that the governing coalition had retained its majority, but much weaker, with just 121 seats out of 229 total, and 135 compared to the socialists' record electoral victory in 5658. Leader of the SPP, and incoming Premier Ajigen Kode, thanked the voters for "choosing stability", emphasising that her party will look into the reason for the declining vote share, adding that the path of her government will remain unchanged compared to her predecessor, keeping and strengthening focus on the economy, people, international relations and stability.

On the other side, right-of-centre opposition forces celebrated, but not with the euphoria one might expect from a movement that has seemingly risen from the dead. The DPP, echoing the "success" of its coalition predecessor in 5648, initially lost that election but maintained a strong opposition stance. Now, the newly formed DPP, with 83 deputies in its parliamentary group, presents a more formidable challenge to socialists in Yuan and in future elections. The leader of the Democrats recognised this, stating during his election night speech that "the journey towards premiership only began".
