Faustyna Sabała (GiP) becomes new Chancellor amid public outcry

Three-way fast deal struck between Dignity and Progress, Sovereign Valruzia and Forward Valruzia deprives KPW's Iwan Nowik from a second mandate

In a stunning turn of events following the 5665 elections, Faustyna Sabała of Dignity and Progress (GiP) has been appointed as the new Chancellor of Valruzia. The appointment follows a rapid three-way coalition deal between Dignity and Progress, Sovereign Valruzia (SW), and Forward Valruzia (NW), which effectively blocked Chancellor Iwan Nowik (KPW) from securing a second mandate despite the Communist Party’s historic electoral victory. The Communist Party of Valruzia was reportedly caught in shock when the constitutive session of the Sejm, always scheduled one month after the elections, proceeded to voting in a new Marshall, since all intents of a negotiation between them and Sovereign Valruzia had been apparently shot down. But when the vote took place – carried out by public voice, as mandated by a parliamentary reform carried out by the KPW during the last legislature to ensure transparency and accountability – Maja Pajak was reelected for the position thanks to the votes of Dignity and Progress, Forward Valruzia and Sovereign Valruzia. Confused looks were visible in the faces of the KPW deputies – the major fraction in the Sejm – as Mrs. Pajak proceeded to take her place at the front of the parliament. But the show was just about to start, since Marshall Pajak announced that a voting to elect the new Chancellor would take place immediately after a brief recess.

Confused looks and shouts could be heard both from the KPW's fraction but also from the far-right Valruzian Alliance and the newly formed Our Homeland party, as to failing to understand what was happening. Usually, a voting round for the Chancellery took place two weeks after the election of the Marshall, after talks were finished. However, KPW had not engaged in any government talks yet, and although the Sejm's rules does not especifically prevent a Chancellorship's voting right after the election of the Marshall, it was highly unlikely that a new Chancellor had been agreed upon yet. Or so they thought. In the Sejm's corridors during the recess, one could see advisors running up and down as to trying to understand what was going on, something that would be resolved just half an hour later. 

When the recess was over and all the deputies were back in the chamber, Marshall Pajak announced that after talks with the parliamentary groups, she was proposing Dignity and Progress leader Faustyna Sabala for the position of Chancellor of Valruzia. Immediately, murmurs of disbelief could be heard across the Chamber. Dignity and Progress had just only obtained 5.43% of the vote. But when the vote took place, once again by public voice, reality struck: Sovereign Valruzia and Forward Valruzia supported the socialdemocratic candidate, bringing exactly the 301 votes that were neccesary (150 from Sovereign Valruzia, 121 from Forward Valruzia and the 30 deputies from Dignity and Progress). As Faustyna Sabala was formally appointed as Chancellor and tasked with going to the Presidential Palace to be officially appointed, KPW deputies started to leave the Chamber among cries of "manipulation" and "political pantomime". KPW' leader and now former Chancellor Iwan Nowik took the stage to accuse the new coalition of "subverting and silencing" the will of the people.

"an agreement behind close doors, which nobody knew about, between forces that supposedly have nothing in common such as Sovereign Valruzia and Forward Valruzia just to deny the rightful winner of the elections their right to attempt forming a government."

Iwan Nowik also announced that he would put the matter into the hands of the Supreme Court, as he did not believe that what was done and the way it was done was "constitutional in any possible way". 

Outside parliament, protestors started to gather in response to the newly elected Chancellor, with some of them asking the KPW's three members of the Presidency to block the election.

"why would our long-time allies of Sovereign Valruzia do something like this is beyond me".

 

"This new leader of Sovereign Valruzia has just destroyed [Szymon] Nowik's whole legacy, and probably the whole party"

said other, visibly frustrated and which identified themselves as a Sovereign Valruzia voter.

Some political analysts point at Sovereign Valruzia's bitter relationship with the KPW since they overtook the former and became the largest party in parliament during the past elections, while others also fail to understand the decision and how it can benefit the party in any way. Chancellor Faustyna Sabala has also refused to give explanations or detail the agreement, only saying that "what our nation needs now is a responsible government centered in moderation and common-sense reforms". According to internal sources, Iwan Nowik has vowed to deliver "the fiercest opposition to this Frankenstein government".

"Sovereign Valruzia has burnt all the bridges with our party. After everything we have done with them, after everything we have supported, they couldn't stand that, for once, people chose something different than them. This is an affront to Valruzian voters, to Valruzian citizens, and to the legacy of my father. This is Sovereign Valruzia – and Dignity and Progress, losing all possible honor they could have"

As it has been reported, former Chancellor Szymon Nowik had called the new leadership of Sovereign Valruzia to demand explanations to the movement done by the party, but was met with silence from party officials. 

But it was not only the KPW speaking against the deal. Valruzian Alliance leader Roksana Krysiak described the newly born government as a "coalition of sore losers".

"They say that we are a danger to our democracy and immediately after, they proceed to do such kind of agreements. Who inflicts more danger to our democracy then?"

Massive protests are expected to continue the following days, as Kaja Romanowicz (KPW) – reelected Kampanian Marshall with over 51% and therefore one of the members of the Presidency of Valruzia – has already hinted about the possibility of rejecting Sabala's election as Chancellor, which would bring another constitutional crisis.
