Luthori-Vascanian relations coming under fire by Left Opposition as Foreign Office continues "balancing" act.

FORT WILLIAM - MAY 8TH: Luthorian officials commented on recent Vascanian “moves” towards democratisation and institutionalisation with “great interest”, with officials from Fort William noting “positive change” ongoing in Vascania, contrasting with the Luthorian critical response to the self-coup orchestrated by Vascanian Prime Minister Vikas. Mr. Vikas, with the support of both the Imperial Vascanian Army and the Vascanian Emperor, suspended in 5660 most democratic institutions and jailed most of his left-wing political opponents, with no real amnesty plan and timeframe being considered or planned by Kamalata officials. While Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Coverty didn’t make a statement about Vascania since 5660. He nonetheless privately noted about “positive” developments in the nation, with the resumption of democratic governance, while also lamenting the fact that, for all instances and purposes, Vascania became a one-party state.

While noting agreeable developments, Foreign Office officials still commented on the “necessity” of the “full resumption of democratic governance” and the liberation of current jailed political prisoners. Human rights organisation comments that their jailing conditions is “below international norms and customs in terms of incarceration conditions”, with Vascanian jail officers allegedly engaging in “acts of torture” upon prisoners, with families continuing to protest their incarceration, saying that the Vascanian government “illegally and/or wrongly framed them”. The International Press Corps also reported issues with journalistic freedom in Vascania, while it’s still largely respected in urban centres, it is nonetheless being targeted in rural areas, with journalists finding that their work became essentially more difficult in these areas.

While Foreign Secretary Coverty rejected any comments on the Vascanian situation, with his spokesperson on the “Eastern World”, Mr. Adam Oliver, saying that the Luthorian Empire was “monitoring the situation in Vascania and neighbouring areas, determined to assure international monitoring in regards to tensions between the Vascanian Empire and the Democratic Republic of Xsampa in the Sovereign Sea.”, he is nonetheless coming under fire by numerous organisations within Luthori, that criticise the government’s seeming “compliance” with the current Vascanian regime, with associations denouncing Luthori’s continued association with Vascania in numerous oil-related partnerships and Luthori’s trade relationship with the nation. Eagleton Muller, 42, Dundorfian-Luthorian head of the “Watcher” association, said that it was “deeply hypocritical” from the Luthorian government to “preach about democracy and human rights”, but also “cowardly turning her back when democracy is being threatened and human rights could be on the line as well”. 

Numerous MPs, especially from the Prime Minister’s “Red Labour” wing also criticised this position. Senior Labour MP, Thomas Pagleton said in an interview to national broadcaster, Channel 7, that the Luthorian Government “need to take more actions against the authoritarian regime that is currently taking form in Vascania”, and stated to have “personally” made part to both the Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary about his position. MPs from the Radical Democratic Party and the Communist Party wrote a letter to the direction of the Foreign Secretary, criticising an “imperialist bargain” and calling for the “liberation” of the people of Rapa Pile, the liberation of all “political prisoners” and the overthrow of “Vascania’s decadent bourgeois regime”, long-time former Communist Party leader, Peter Duce, who made headlines by his famous letter to the current government of the Democratic People’s Republic or Dranea, addressed the issue by saying that the current administration are merely "reactionaries with a pink clothing” during an event. While Mr. Duce isn’t a member of the Communist Party of Luthori’s Politburo, he still carries weight within the party’s members, being the first party leader to lead the Communist Party into its first legal participation in a general election.

Current Communist Party leader, Sylvia Hoche, of Canrillaise-Luthorian descent, while denouncing the perceived government’s support towards Vascania, still distanced herself from her predecessor’s extremist rhetoric, refuting calls for an overthrow of the Vascanian monarchy and government through an open revolution, merely calling the government to “ramp up pressure” towards Vascania to look towards the “full restoration of democratic law in the nation”. Mrs. Hoche, 37, is the youngest party leader to date, while her election in 5661, following Mr. Duce’s decision to step down from the leadership has been met with some reaction, most of these were mostly focused around the fact that Mr. Duce would still wield heavy influence within the party and the fact that Mrs. Hoche was directly handpicked by her predecessor to succeed him, which was a testament of this fact.

Mrs. Hoche’s defiance to Mr. Duce can be seen as a sign of potential infighting within the CPL, except if, of course, all of this is resolved behind the eyes of the public within the Politburo. Reports have shown, in relations to the Vascanian affair, that Sir Alexander Pitt, the appointed head of the Imperial Foreign Intelligence Agency has met with the Vascanian Ambassador to Luthori, discussing subjects that haven’t been disclosed, further encouraging accusations of Luthori “colluding” with Vascania, coming from a part of the Luthorian left. Meanwhile, the right remained silent on the matter altogether.
