Foreign Secretary Coverty yesterday announced that Luthori would move towards a “provisional” recognition of the Rildanor Government based in the island of Meriath during an interview granted to national public broadcaster LBC News.

“Thomas Olf (LBC): Mr. Secretary, there has been a lot of speculation about a potential recognition of the Meriath’s government, what is the government’s plan regarding this island, does Luthori wish to create relations with them?

Foreign Secretary Coverty: Well, just to say, it’s quite simple, currently, as far as I am aware, there is currently a tenuous ceasefire holding both sides of the Anantonese from going off against one another once again. One side became a one-party right-wing authoritarian state and the other is mostly composed of democratic freedom fighters fighting for a better future for their nation, so of course, Luthori will move towards a provisional recognition of the Isle of Meriath’s authorities as proper representatives of the Rildanorian people. That goes without any form of doubt.

TO (LBC): You said a “provisional” recognition, what does that mean exactly?

FSC: It’s simple. Meriath remains a war zone as we speak, even as Egelian forces are cleaning up the rest of the area from potential threats against their allied government. We are merely remaining wary of potential resumption of the fighting, but after like…3 years, Luthori will move towards a permanent recognition of Meriath’s status as the legitimate government of Rildanor.”

This was Foreign Secretary Coverty during his interview with the LBC where he defended the administration’s line on numerous foreign policy issues such as Vascania, Meriath and the tensions within the Migrants’ Pass. While he announced the recognition of the legitimacy of the Meriath Government, which granted him widespread support for his measure across the political spectrum, except within the Luthorian Nationalist Party, who criticised the Government’s decision on the grounds that “Luthori shouldn’t be concerning herself with the actions of a sovereign state which was illegally invaded by a foreign power”, Mr. Matt Kirkpatrick, Nationalist leader, stated that he “wished” for Luthori to make “the right choice” and “reject” this “naked form of imperialism” by rejecting the recognition of Meriath as Rildanor’s legitimate government. Mr. Kirkpatrick has vowed to block the government through raising a motion in the Chamber of Representatives, committing Luthori to a “neutral path about events happening in Rildanor”, a motion that is likely to get defeated handily by the First Chamber.

The Foreign Office refused to comment on the Nationalist leader’s statements, stating that the Foreign Office was merely applying the principles of what is known today as the “Coverty Doctrine”, with a high emphasis on respect of human rights and democratic principles both at home and abroad. For the Foreign Secretary, the recognition of Meriath’s proclamation as the “legitimate government of Rildanor” is merely another step in the concretisation of this policy. While recognising that the situation in Rildanor deserves our “upmost attention”, which for Luthori is through an international legitimisation of the Meriath regime’s existence, the Foreign Secretary nevertheless expressed doubts as to the manner of how it was achieved, casting doubts on the Kingdom of Egelion’s ability or willingness to pursue diplomacy instead of engaging headfirst into a conflict that could have transformed into a quagmire and a logistical nightmare for Egelian forces.

FSC: While I am not criticising the grounds for Egelian intervention, rather I can hardly find any issues with the fact that Egelion came down there to “defend democracy” so to speak, but, I am merely asking, would this intervention went better if other states, in a multilateral efforts, joined in as well. Now, look, I am not saying, contrary to some people’s wishes, that Meriath should been left alone to her own devices, but, I am merely asking the question of whether or not Egelion conducted enough diplomatic manoevers prior to the intervention and these efforts failed and did the Kingdom engaged in any meaningful discussion on the subject with other powers which might have been involved.

Again, this isn’t a refutation of the necessity of the intervention, but, let’s think about it, if Egelion had taken an multilateral approach to the current crisis, having for example, discussed with Kalistan, Gaduridos or/and Mordusia beforehand, even if these diplomatic approach at forming a multilateral coalition against Rildanor, maybe we wouldn’t have observed a split in behavior from numerous nations, with Egelion wholeheartedly supporting Meriath as the legitimate government and Kalistan seemingly throwing its hat behind the government in the mainland, before withdrawing from it. If diplomatic actions had been used beforehand to reduce the potential of such a split and weaken the strength of the international community when dealing with Rildanor, maybe we wouldn’t be in such a situation, dare I might say, maybe the government in Rildanor wouldn’t leave the slightest doubt to numerous nations.

Only when all diplomatic options were exhausted should Egelion have directly intervened in the conflict, but Egelian officials, even before the intervention dismissed this idea, which is highly unfortunate in my opinion.

When asked about the similarity of his proposals as to the “coalition of the willing” that formed in reaction to the rise of the Legionary regime in Kundrati and helped fought back the fascists back into history books in the First and Second Kundrati Wars and how that policy had mostly failed in the long-term, with Kundrati succumbing to right-wing populists and coming back towards authoritarianism, the Foreign Secretary rejected analysis that the formation of a multilateral coalition was the cause of the failure of the Kundrati experiment.

FSC: I understand the similarity between Etxea and Meriath, but at the end of the day, the failures of Kundrati were not caused by the Coalition at first glance. They were mostly caused by the abandonment of the international community and its inability to come up together to draw up a real plan of reconstruction and delegitimisation of the Legionary regime. No timeframe for the occupation had been agreed to between Etxean and Coalition officials, which led to the headless decade-long occupation that brought nothing but resentment between both sides of the Artanian Sea in the long-term, and we are still seeing that resentment in the speeches of Kundrati officials, who are calling upon Luthorians as an easy scapegoat to feed to their population.

Finally, when asked about potential economic aid for Meriath to booster the nation’s economic development for the future, the Foreign Secretary remained opened at the idea, stating that the issue should be discussed with the Rildanorian Ambassador in Fort William when that person would have been appointed by the Government of Rildanor later on, but Mr. Coverty remained open and encouraged further discussions to the idea of having Luthori’s Foreign Investment Bank deliver economic aid to the struggling nation.
