The Imperial Navy launches the new LHD Invicta

A multipurpose vessel that marks a quantum leap in the Imperial State's amphibious and air-naval capabilities

ALBETA - The solemn launch of the new LHD Invicta, the latest flagship of Istalian naval shipbuilding, took place at the Albeta shipyards. The ceremony, charged with symbolic and strategic significance, was attended by His Majesty the Emperor Tommaso, accompanied by Grand Crown Princess Eleonora, who acted as godmother and christened the vessel with the traditional breaking of a bottle.

The LHD Invicta is a multipurpose Landing Helicopter Dock, an amphibious assault helicopter carrier designed to combine amphibious projection, command and control, logistical support, and advanced air-naval operations in a single platform. Over 245 meters long, with a full load displacement of approximately 35,000 tons, the ship has a continuous flight deck with six take-off and landing spots for medium and heavy helicopters, as well as a large hangar below connected by two large elevators.

The latest-generation propulsion system allows for a maximum speed of 25 knots, with a range of over 9,000 nautical miles. The LHD Invicta can embark a contingent of over 900 marines with land and armored vehicles, thanks to a large floodable well deck capable of accommodating landing craft and amphibious vehicles. Defense-wise, the ship is equipped with short-range missile systems, remotely controlled artillery, and an advanced electronics suite for electronic warfare and air defense.

But the real innovation is its naval air flexibility: although conceived as an amphibious ship, the LHD Invicta was built to standards that allow it to operate as a light aircraft carrier. This feature remains, for now, on paper due to delays in the development of the carrier-based version of the new F-60 multirole fighter, the fighter announced under Defense Program 5700, intended as a more affordable version of the more complex and expensive F-52, produced in smaller quantities than expected.

With the LHD Invicta, the Imperial Navy further strengthens its amphibious capabilities, already enhanced in recent years with the entry into service of the LPHs Arturo Gabriele III and Eugenio II. These lighter yet extremely versatile vessels have improved transport and naval air support capabilities in external projection operations. The class will be completed next year with the launch of the Deodato II.

The LHD Invicta, however, represents a qualitative leap: not only because of its increased capacity for transporting troops and equipment, but above all because it will be able to accommodate, in addition to attack and transport helicopters, latest-generation unmanned drones intended for reconnaissance, surveillance, and, ultimately, attack. The Ministry of Defense is evaluating whether, instead of continuing with the program for a carrier-based version of the F-60, it should focus on a smaller purchase of foreign VTOL aircraft, approximately 30 units, thus saving resources for reinvestment in the development of unmanned systems.

The launch of the LHD Invicta is being interpreted as a clear message of the Imperial Navy's desire to consolidate a modern, deployable, and technologically advanced fleet. With it, the Imperial Navy not only expands its amphibious operations and support capabilities in multinational scenarios, but also prepares for a future in which manned aircraft and unmanned systems will operate side by side from the decks of Istalian naval units.

At the same time, construction work is already underway on two new helicopter carriers dedicated to anti-submarine warfare, large platforms specifically designed to strengthen the protection of Imperial sea lanes. Over 250 meters long and with a displacement exceeding 27,000 tons, these vessels will feature a continuous flight deck with five launch sites and a large hangar below, optimized for the embarkation of latest-generation ASW helicopters. Equipped with advanced sensors, multifunction radar, and high-capacity sonar systems, the new helicopter carriers will be able to coordinate complex surveillance and counter-underwater threat operations and decisively strengthen the protection of its sea lines, ensuring a quantum leap in anti-submarine warfare.

With the entry into service of the LHD Invicta and these two future vessels, the Imperial Navy will be able to rely on a balanced force combining amphibious, air-sea, and anti-submarine capabilities, consolidating its position among the most modern and efficient naval forces in the world.
