Elections of 5678: Conservatives rise amid scandals and discontent, but the Coalition of Change remains in government
The Teentime affair shakes public opinion, but the majority holds firm. The Greens are hot on the heels of the PSD, while internal discontent is growing within the PNC and PNL
ROMULA - The July 5678 elections concluded with a result that, while marking a setback from the triumphant gains of previous legislatures, confirmed the Coalition of Change's leadership of the country. The progressive front led by the Social Democratic Party (PSD), together with the Greens' Movement (MdV) and the Party of New Communists (PNC), won 290 of 475 seats, thus maintaining a solid but no longer dominant majority.

The main event that shaped the election campaign was undoubtedly the "Teentime affair", the media scandal that inflamed public debate and reignited long-dormant ethical and moral questions. While the progressive left attempted to downplay and defend cultural pluralism and creative freedoms, conservative forces, particularly the Democratic Union (UOD) and the most traditionalist fringe of the National Liberal Party (PNL), but also the Party of New Communists from the left, harnessed popular discontent with harsh tones, calling for traditional values on one hand and for the moral responsibility of institutions on the other. The reactions, however, saw also a mobilization of the progressive field aimed a defend the anti-paternalistic reforms.
The combined result translated into a significant recovery for the opposition, which overall grew in votes and seats: if the Hosian Democratic Union (UOD), in particular, gained support among moderate voters and in rural areas, the liberals of Democracy & Freedom (D&L) achieved their best result in the last ten years, capturing part of the progressive electorate most disillusioned by tensions within the government and concerned by the conservative mobilization. The PNL, instead, while remaining the main opposition party, has been unable to fully capitalize on the political moment, weakened by the leadership crisis of those last years, internal divisions and a process of ideological clashes within the party.
On the other hand, the Coalition of Change is partly paying the price for its long tenure in power and the shadow cast by recent scandals. The Democratic Socialist Party (PSD) has fallen to 136 seats, reflecting a decline in support among centrist and reformist voters, yet it remains the country’s leading force. Behind it, the Greens’ Movement (114 seats) confirms its status as the coalition’s emerging force, increasingly challenging the Social Democratic leadership. The Greens have strengthened their reputation as a pragmatic party able to reconcile sustainability and economic growth, capitalizing on the broad consensus generated by their achievements in the environmental economy and in the defense of personal freedoms, both of which have become cornerstones of Istalia’s new green economy and society. Despite the wear of government and internal controversies, the coalition’s solid performance in the ongoing economic transition, coupled with the mobilization of progressive voters determined to protect the freedoms gained over the past decade from the attacks of the conservatives, has ultimately rewarded the left with another mandate.
However, the situation is different for the New Communists (PNC), who, despite gaining slightly in seats, attracting the left electorate more conservative on the side of social and personal liberties, and probably the most scandalized by the life of the Istalian élites and its young people, find themselves deeply divided within their ranks. Many leaders denounce what they consider a "moralistic and neoliberal drift" within the coalition, accusing the PSD of having lost touch with the original principles of the socialism itself. After the elections, some voices within the PNC questioned the alliance's continuation, fearing that the Coalition of Change risks losing "not only votes, but also ethics and moral identity". One of its most important members, Sara Sofia Lanciani, said:
Despite the tensions, the government led by Fabrizio Moccia, for the moment, can still count on a stable and united majority. Analyst count also on the ability of Moccia to mediate between the different souls of the Coalition. The Minister Secretary of State, confirmed for his fourth consecutive term, promised a five-year period "of continuity and renewal, aimed at consolidating the economic and social results achieved and correcting the imbalances that still hinder full inclusion and national cohesion".
After the results were clear, from the Coalition of Change headquarters, Fabrizio Moccia gave a speech to the press and supporters there gathered:
Moccia’s determination to pursue his government’s vision appears unwavering, even as the political landscape around him undergoes a significant transformation. Istalia seems is entering a new chapter marked by polarization and redefinition: a reformist majority that remains strong yet increasingly called to defend itself, not only from a conservative opposition reinvigorated by renewed voter confidence, but also from internal dissent. However, with a weakened PNL and the challenge of establishing cooperation with D&L, the road ahead for the Right remains uncertain. If 5678 indeed signals the end of fifteen years of supermajorities, it also portrays a nation that, despite tensions and ideological divides, continues to pursue stability as the most reliable path toward lasting change.

We believe in a free, just and inclusive Istalia, where every citizen can contribute to the common good according to his or her own conscience and aspirations.
The trust that the Istalian people have renewed tonight is not a reward, but a responsibility, a call to govern with balance, courage and integrity. And that is exactly what we intend to do.
