Towards a permanent sustainable society

The Government launches "second-generation environmental policies" amid ambition, pragmatism and new challenges within the majority

ROMULA - After years of green transition and profound industrial transformation, the government led by Fabrizio Moccia is ushering in a new phase of Istalian environmental policy: that of a "permanent sustainable society", with the goal of bringing the country to climate neutrality by the end of the century. This step marks the maturation of the national environmental strategy, which is now called upon to consolidate what has been achieved and push beyond the threshold of experimentation.

At the heart of the new government plan are four strategic axes: accelerating renewable energy and the gradual closure of uncompensated gas-fired power plants; reforming urban and rail public transport to achieve zero emissions; the Urban Green Program for reforestation and suburban regeneration; and finally, Popular Green Bonds, government bonds accessible to citizens to finance sustainable infrastructure projects and energy communities.

The central role played by the Greens' Movement, the driving force behind these new policies, is evident. With its 114 seats, it confirms its role as the environmental driving force behind the Coalition of Change. Their influence was decisive in setting ambitious goals and defining the reform's social sustainability framework. However, as often happens in coalition dynamics, compromises were made this time too: pressure from allies, particularly the Party of New Communists, led to nuclear power being retained as an integral part of the path to carbon neutrality.

Despite internal tensions, the Greens can still claim substantial success. They have succeeded in establishing a significantly high share of renewables in the national energy structure, ensuring that the transition does not result in a mere technological substitution, but rather in a profound cultural and industrial transformation.

The Urban Green Program, the flagship of the plan, will be the laboratory for a new "proximity" sustainability: reforestation, urban gardens, suburban redevelopment and the creation of green public spaces as tools for social cohesion and territorial balance. This model combines the environment, inclusion and health, reinforcing the idea that sustainability is not just about ecology, but about quality of life.

The spokesperson of the Ministry of the Environment and Tourism said to the press:

It's no longer just about transition, but about building a permanent system in which every economic and social choice is consistent with environmental protection.

The plan, which will be presented to Parliament within the year, promises to become the most advanced platform ever created in Istalia for the fight against climate change. Ambitious, complex and politically sensitive, it marks the beginning of a decade in which the challenge will no longer be just to achieve change, but to make that change permanent.

A goal that, as Minister Moccia stated, "requires vision, unity, and determination. It won't be easy, but Istalia's sustainable future begins now".
