Valruzia reportedly growing weary of Kalistani officials' tone: "Respect must be mutual"

Officials in Nowogard express frustration over recurring "disrespectful remarks" from Chancellor Donahue, warning that patience "has limits" even between longtime allies.

Last month's decision of Chancellor of the Empire Lady Ericka Donahue that her country would abandon its "experiment with internationalism" and return to a nationalist and isolationist posture haven't come as a surprise for many in Valruzia, but the decision not be part of any discussions around Valruzia and instead appointing the Kalistani foreign minister, Mr. Greene, as the valid intermediate between both nations due to her outspoken "anti-communist" views have not been well-received in the neighbouring North Seleyan nation. In Nowogard, this news have not been received as a surprise, but more of a fatigue.

In a statement issued Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Valruzia’s commitment to "respectful and stable diplomacy", while acknowledging that "patience has limits".

"Valruzia has been a consistent and reliable partner to the Empire of Ananto and Kalistan for many years, and has always refrained from judging or interfering in its internal decisions, even if we do not agree with them or we do not find in agreement with its institutions" the communiqué read. "However, respect must be mutual. We cannot continue to ignore repeated public remarks that question or disparage our institutions and principles".

Diplomatic sources told Valruzia Today that the general mood within the Chancellery was one of "weary irritation". Acknowledging the "regrettagle" decision made by Kalistan, the Office of the Chancellery has announced that Chancellor Iwan Nowik will no longer meet with Kalistani Foreign Minister Henry Greene, instead meeting only with his "only valid counterpart", Valruzian Foreign Minister Waldemar Smołka.

"We are not shocked about this, we are simply tired" said one senior official on condition of anonymity. "Valruzia has never criticized Kalistan’s domestic politics, even when we disagreed. That respect has not always been reciprocated, and if mutual understanding depends on who happens to be in power in Nowogard, perhaps it is not as solid a friendship as we once believed. We have not once spoken against its Chancellor, or against its monarchy, even though our anti-monarchy position is obviously well-known. We have held a lot of bilateral meetings without any trouble, because for us, that is what diplomacy is for, to find the best for two good neighbours even when you do not agree with the decisions or the institutions they have in place."

This remarks refer to a long list of incidents involving Lady Donahue, who in 5678 described the Valruzian system as "communist plague" and sent them to hell during a press outburst, and again earlier this year labeled communism "a pernicious global threat". Despite repeated apologies from Kaliburg and attempts by Valruzian Chancellor Iwan Nowik to reduce the tension, the relationship between the two nations has remained cool since then.

Another senior Valruzian diplomat who has participated in multiple rounds of bilateral talks with Kaliburg went further in their comments to Valruzia Today:

"Valruzia has proven time and again that it is a reliable, trustworthy and loyal partner. But reliability should never be confused with weakness, nor loyalty with servility" they said. "Our country has stood by Kalistan in many moments without asking for anything in return, and the same has happened the other way around, in moments such as when our nation was hit by Hurricane Pavlo, or once Valruzia was being rebuilt after we defeated our dictatorship. Valruzia does not forget and is always grateful towards its allies and friends, and that's why it hurts more to see such an attitude towards us. One must wonder whether it truly serves Kalistan’s interests to alienate one of its most steadfast allies on the global stage, the same way Valruzia does not want it to happen".

He added that dismissing Valruzia through ideological labels shows a lack of perspective.

"Perhaps, instead of clinging to outdated stereotypes about one of the parties in the Valruzian government, they could look at the policies the government has been implementing, policies that have measurably improved the lives of millions of Valruzian citizens".

While officials in Nowogard avoided further escalating the tension, many analysts noted that Valruzia's reaction marks a shift in the tone used in previous reactions. Valruzia’s influence in Seleya, and especially Northern Seleya, has expanded steadily over the past four decades. Its stable democratic institutions, dynamic industries, rapidly growing and strong economy, and record trade surpluses have made it a central actor in continental politics. For global companies and many governments alike, losing access to Valruzia’s enormous market, the second most-populated nation in the Seleyan continent – and also to its political goodwill – is widely seen as a mistake no country can afford lightly. Indeed in Nowogard, the Foreign Ministry closed its statement on a delicate note:

"Valruzia remains open to dialogue and cooperation, but mutual respect cannot be selective. True friendship between nations does not and should not depend on electoral cycles or democratic results, but on a feeling of shared trust and confidence in one another's institutions".

Outside government circles, public opinion has been far less restrained but still, few in Nowogard expect an outright rupture. "There may be a cooling of relations, but Valruzia’s foreign policy has always been patient and principled" Dr. Stawczyk noted. "And that patience, paradoxically, may be what Kaliburg most takes for granted"

Now, the upcoming Valruzia–Kalistan Economic Meeting, scheduled to take place in next month, is on the air, but experts insist it is still expected to proceed as planned, though "the atmosphere may be frostier than usual". Following these Valruzian government declarations, the national market opened with some losses, the first time in a long time that the WALEX was affected negatively.
