Centrist Parties Form Government After Snap Election Victory

This month's snap elections following the resignation of Prime Minister Duangnet Bunnag in the continued fallout of the Kaeyaphum rail bridge collapse last November have yielded a slim majority for the center-left New Elephant Worker's Party (NEWP) and the centrist Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (PIE). President Nantakarn met with leaders of the NEWP, which won a plurality of seats in the National Assembly (161 seats [32%], up from 95 [19%]), to offer his congratulations and request that NEWP chairwoman Chandra Srisai propose a government for his approval.

Srisai, a member of the National Assembly for sixteen years, accepted the request and NEWP and PIE teams undertook negotiations that lasted nearly three days. Last night NEWP leadership proposed, and President Nantakarn approved a cabinet led by Srisai and composed of 10 NEWP and 8 PIE ministers in addition to the PM. The governing coalition controls only 254 of the 501 National Assembly seats (NEWP 161, PIE 93), leading many experts to predict further uncertainty in the capital after years of instability under various left-wing coalitions.

The NEWP's ascent is largely the result of the electoral collapse of outgoing-PM Bunnag's Revolutionary Alliance, which sank to a record low 66 seats after revelations of corruption and coverup by the erstwhile PM and outgoing-Transport Minister Tam Kosaisook.

Speaking to a crowd of supporters in Udon Nakhon, Prime Minister Srisai stated that the new government would set to work on rebuilding trust in government and restoring the pride of all South Dovanians.

Gov't: First Kaeyaphum Rail Inquest Faced Systemic Obstruction

The investigation into circumstances surrounding the November 5618 collapse of the Tapi river rail bridge near Kaeyaphum on the Ntoto border has been restarted by the Srisai government, with Minister of Transport Osathee Honghannarong (NEWP) today stating that initial findings show the first inquest into the collapse were hindered by systemic obstruction.

"Our investigators have found significant evidence that the first team was misled and delayed in fundamental aspects of their investigation into the Tapi river rail bridge collapse," stated Minister Honghannarong, speaking of the court-appointed investigative team which controversially declared itself unable to determine a single cause or contributing factor in May 5619 after six months of investigative work into the event that took the lives of 34 South Dovanians. "More than ten individuals are believed to have lied or seriously misled to the first team, rendering their efforts impossible."

Despite the claim, no charges have been filed against alleged obstructors, and a spokesman for Duangnet Bunnag who was prime minister at the time of the disaster and whose Revolutionary Alliance government crumbled in the wake of the failed inquiry responded to the news by stating that "the renewed inquest is a political witch hunt meant to further persecute an administration that has already been slandered viciously by those who wish this nation ill". During the election campaign the New Elephant Worker's Party accused the Bunnag government and Revolutionary Alliance authorities in Nakhom Phaphu province of not investigating the collapse with enough urgency. A popular online campaign (which the RA claimed was orchestrated by NEWP insiders) went so far as to place blame for the collapse on RA policies, which commenters said created a culture of neglect and apathy.

Tapi River Inquiry: Bunnag Gov't Knew of Structural Deficiencies

The continued investigation into the Tapi River rail bridge collapse yielded concerning new findings this week, with inquiry spokesman Paramat Chamroon announcing to press in Kaeyaphum that statements from local officials indicate the Bunnag administration knew of and ignored structural deficiencies in the rail bridge prior to the tragedy.

Though Mr. Chamroon stated that sources would not yet be named, the second inquiry has evidence that Isaree Thaugsuban (Revolutionary Alliance Minister of Transport during the Bunnag government) and Niran Yao-Yun (RA, Governor of the State Railway of South Dovani) each received at least three credible complaints from local and municipal officials regarding the state of the crossing in the year leading up to the 5618 derailment. According to these sources, both the State Railway and Ministry of Transport promised an influx of funds necessary for repairs but the funds never materialized. Several sources stated that this state of affairs was "common in Nakhom Phaphu", a claim sure to cause concern among the millions of South Dovanians and Ntotoans who rely on the State Railway system for daily travel.

In response to the statement, current Minister of Transport Osathee Honghannarong (New Elephant Worker's Party) noted that the new government has quickly moved to address a "systemic deficiency" inherited from the previous administration in the distribution of funds to needy projects. "Under the Bunnag administration, our provinces and cities had to pay to play - the government doled out money only to those who were its stalwart friends. Those times have ended. We are here to help." Local officials stated that funds are indeed more easily accessed since the new government took power.

A spokesman for former PM Duangnet Bunnag (who remains a member of the National Assembly and leader of the RA) stated that the inquiry's findings were politically motivated, emphasized that no charges had been leveled against any members of the Bunnag administration, and denied any "pay-to-play" favoritism.

FM Advises Against Travel to Valruzia in Wake of Protests, Sejm Bombing

The Foreign Ministry has issued a Do Not Travel travel advisory for Valruzia today after reports of an explosion at the Valruzian national legislature shocked the world. The official warning notes that ongoing civil unrest in the wake of the death of Valruzian student Robert Obrzut makes travel to Valruzia dangerous for South Dovanian citizens, who may not be able to leave safely and who the government may not be able to provide emergency services for, should the need arise.

Travel by South Dovanians to Valruzia is not particularly common given its distant location from the Dovanian republic, but spokespeople for the Foreign Ministry noted that nearly 30,000 South Dovanians traveled to or through Valruzia in 5622 according to self-reported travel plans lodged with the Ministry.

The ongoing violence in the northern Seleyan state has worsened since it began in earnest in May, with students and other protestors facing reported crackdowns and access to internet and neutral media limited within the country. The Foreign Ministry has not directly condemned the Morawski government, but alongside the release of the travel advisory today did state that South Dovani believes in the basic rights to protest and against arbitrary imprisonment. The Republic of South Dovani was birthed out of revolution from the Kingdom of Hanzen in 5510 and has strong legal protections for demonstration.

South Dovanian Delegation Departs for Altéa

South Dovani will take another step toward engaging the world for the first time in earnest since the Scarlet Rose Revolution over a century ago this month when its delegation joins other world leaders at Altéa in Egelion for a major conference to discuss trade, security, and matters of importance.

The conference, organized by the King of Egelion, has drawn pledges of attendance from many of Terra's nations. Though South Dovani is a small player on the world stage, Prime Minister Chandra Srirai has made it a platform of her New Elephant Worker's Party in the coming 5625 election to open international doors which have been closed for most of the post-Revolutionary period.

Attending for South Dovani are Anong Chavalit, Minister of Foreign Affairs (NEWP), Pridi Vorasarn, Minister of Finance (PIE), and Ratchanee Thephasdin, Deputy Minister of Trade and Economic Cooperation (NEWP). The South Dovanian delegation has been tasked with establishing closer ties in particular with nations similar to South Dovani, who have recently moved away from extremes and toward moderate liberal democracy. When asked what South Dovani will pursue specifically, Minister Chavalit stated that the key aims for South Dovani are twofold: first, South Dovani will propose a trade and infrastructure development framework among nations transitioning from authoritarian rule, aimed at stabilizing economies and encouraging multilateral relations. Second, South Dovani will seek to engage in discussions with Xsampa, with the aim of encouraging regional cooperation and shared investment while highlighting the importance of Xsampa also embracing political openness and liberal reform where possible.

PM Srirai Applauds Xsampan Elections as "Victory of the Reasonable"

Returns from the first open election in Xsampan history were received happily by South Dovani's Srirai administration today as reforms instituted by outgoing General-Secretary Bhutia in the Democratic Republic led to a narrow victory for a moderate left-wing coalition government. Prime Minister Chandra Srirai praised the conduct of the election which was the first conducted under the aegis of what has been called participatory Metzism, and opined that the retiring Bhutia's reforms are to be admired in both Xsampa and the region at large. The PM and Foreign Minister Anong Chavalit called incoming Premier Ladakh to congratulate them on their victory, and to express the hope that Xsampa and South Dovani can serve as guiding lights for other countries which seek a moderate path.

The Xsampan election has been watched closely by political analysts in South Dovani, where legislative elections are scheduled for later this year. The NEWP-PIE government in Udon Nakhon has outperformed expectations and lasted the full legislative term since the 5619 snap election in the wake of the Tapi River scandal despite holding only a very slim majority in the National Assembly. Victory for moderates in Xsampa is seen by many in the NEWP and PIE as further proof that the region is ready for change and hopes are high in the Srirai administration that an expansion of their mandate may be possible in 5625.

Revolutionary Alliance-affiliated analysts and media proxies have been largely disappointed by the Xsampan outcome, where the Communist Party of Xsampa and the Revolutionary Worker's Party both under performed expectations. The RA has been on the back foot politically since the snap election of 5619, and though disgraced former PM Duangnet Bunnag was replaced at the All-Party conference in 5622 following the loss of Somchai Nantakarn in the presidential election, new leader Thanom Suksawat has struggled to strike a balance between renewal for the party and maintenance of the centuries-old party apparatus.

South Dovani's more right-leaning parties were less enthusiastic at the Xsampan result, with United Conservative Front chairman Prasert Thanomchai releasing a statement noting that though a move away from orthodox Metzist-Leonidism is welcome in South Dovani's eastern neighbor, Xsampans still lack a party with respect for the true economic freedoms that will be necessary to bring prosperity to the region in the wake of centuries of communist depredations. PIE leader Rak Khemanich was careful not to break with the administration's line of general hopefulness, and noted that though the PIE would certainly still support economic liberalization to allow further trade with South Dovani, the result was a great step forward for Xsampa.

Election Night 5625: NEWP-PIE Coalition Strengthened, RA and PPU Continue Slide

Supporters of the Srirai government celebrated across South Dovani tonight as exit polling indicated that the coalition government of the New Elephant Worker's Party and the Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs had grown its mandate from the 3 seat majority it held following the 5619 snap election to 16 seats. Prime Minister Srirai is expected to remain at the head of a government largely unchanged in half a decade as President Pichai Woraphon formally offered Srirai the right to propose a government.

The NEWP and PIE benefited from strong urban turnout, where voters have largely been supportive of the government's efforts both in engaging in more active foreign policy and in particular of efforts to modernize and liberalize the South Dovanian economy. Analysts believe the most important voting issue for supporters of the government parties was the relative success of the Green Energy Transition and Infrastructure Investment Act (GETIIA) passed in 5623. A long term vision for driving privatization and modernization in energy production and transport, GETIIA has already led to significant job growth in South Dovani's metropolitan areas.

Critics of GETIIA however note that it has already run behind time and over budget, and it drew criticism from both the left and right for being a betrayal of the Scarlet Rose Revolution and an overreach of government and major tax waste, respectively. The act is particularly unpopular in rural agricultural communities which still rely on coal for much of their heating and energy generation, a factor in a 5 seat gain for the Agrarian Solidarity Movement, according to analysts.

The most important story of the election was the continued slide of the Revolutionary Alliance and the Progressive People's Union, who lost another collective 20 seats this election on top of the 93 they lost in 5619. The RA has now fallen to become only the 5th largest party in the National Assembly after another gain by the United Conservative Front, which rode successes in the traditional south to a 2 seat increase over 5619.

Prime Minister Srirai addressed supporters in Udon Nakhom and stated that the government's success is due to the success of "common sense policies" both domestically and abroad.

Valruzian Election: FM Chavalit Calls on World to Answer the Call

With the announcement this week that Valruzia will hold constituent elections in January of the coming year, the South Dovanian government expressed optimism for developments in the Seleyan nation which has been wracked by protests and political violence for two years. Speaking to assembled reporters at a conference in Nepar, South Dovanian Foreign Minister Anong Chavalit expressed the hope of the government that this first step toward democratization would be a building block toward long term guarantees of civil liberties and fair rule.

The election, organized by the ruling junta under Marcel Szumski, is an important test for Valruzians, according to Chavalit. As did South Dovanians in 5619, Valruzians face an opportunity to reject extremism and embrace democratic freedom.

The announcement was met in Valruzia with some skepticism as to the junta's ability to guarantee free and fair elections, and several major local organizations have requested international monitors for the election. South Dovani's government has reached out to the Szumski junta on the prospect of sending observers, according to the foreign ministry, and has also broached the topic of Valruzia allowing monitors from several other Organization for Stability and Cooperation in Democratization (OSCD) member nations. The OSCD is a recent entity and Chavalit was instrumental in its creation at the Conference of Altéa last year. At time of press no definitive agreement for monitoring had been reached, but FM Chavalit called on all countries of the OSCD and the broader world to answer the call, should the junta allow.

Refugee Flights: Comfort and Protest Greet Solentians Given Safe Harbor by Srirai Gov't

The first flights carrying Solentian refugees displaced to Istalia by years of warfare in southern Majatra landed in Udon Nakhon today, the fulfillment of promises made by the Srirai government at the Conference of Altéa two years ago. South Dovani has committed to receiving and assimilating 5,000 Solentians from Istalia, with the full transfer expected to complete by 5627.

Reception on the ground for the first arrivals was mixed, with government staff and supporters on hand to deliver both official aid and charitable support countered by a sizeable number of protesters who oppose the influx of refugees.

Trin Boonmee, a 36 year old laborer who joined the protests in opposition to the refugee flights told the Post that he had come to voice his support for keeping the nation's traditional Daenist character. Though this position is in keeping with the official party line of the Hanzen Heritage Party, which has strongly opposed the refugee program in debates in the National Assembly and whose leader Pichai Songsuradej recently stated that "Ahmadism has no place in the nation", Boonmee stated that he identified politically as an independent.

The government's plan for the refugees is to settle nearly half in the Hanzai province, while the remaining Solentians will be dispersed throughout South Dovani, in particular to the central provinces of Kotambang and Segun. HHP- and UCF-led protests are planned in those provinces later this week. The Ministry of the Interior stressed that it supports the right of all South Dovanians to voice their political opinions peacefully.
