Coup in Malivia

The Malivian People's Federation of Councils has remained a passive observer in international affairs since its founding in May 5522. A heavily decentralized socialist federation that replaced the previous authoritarian socialist republic that ruled Malivia, the People's Federation of Councils was largely uninvolved in international affairs and maintained a neutral attitude while tending to its own internal affairs. In spite of its isolationist character, the Federation remained an actively involved in trade across the Migrant's Pass, and was thus affected by the disruption caused by the fall of Beiteynu.

During the last few decades the People's Federation of Councils has suffered from economic crisis, stagnation, infighting between the various clans and autonomous communes, and a national identity crisis that has plagued Malivia since it chose to emulate Vascanian high culture under the influence of the economic and cultural giant across the Red Bass Ocean. Over the years an ultranationalist movement known as Amaro Drom (Our Way) has been growing in popularity, capitalizing on discontent with the Federation's policies. Centred around charismatic leader Kalo Śukar, Amaro Drom became the largest and most organized political faction in a state with no political parties. This October Amaro Drom successfully launched a coup against the People's Federation of Councils, overthrowing President Dr. Anoop Bhattacharya and dissolving the House of Representatives. The coup resulted in the death of the president, but otherwise the total number of casualties is unknown. Nobody seems to know what Amaro Drom's next steps are, but for now one thing is certain. The People's Federation of Councils, a peaceful and decentralized experiment whose early years were marked by success but whose later decades were marred by conflict and stagnation is no more. What will come next only Amaro Drom knows.

Rise of Manoush Nationalism

After last month's coup and the fall of the Malivian People's Federation of Councils at the hands of far-right organization Amaro Drom, the constitutional structure and ideological foundation of post-coup Malivia has taken shape. Basing its claim to legitimacy on extreme Manoush nationalism, Amaro Drom aims to establish a state dedicated to the defense and promotion of Manušipen (literally Manoush-ness), the traditions, clothing, language, and way of life that historically defined belonging to the Manoush nation. The State of Malivia (Them Maliviya) is the new sovereign entity ruling over Malivian territory as of this month, and it is a Manoush supremacist and ultranationalist state founded with the explicit aim of ridding Malivia of Gadjo (non-Manoush) influence and restoring Manoush culture, supposedly tainted by the slavish adoption of Vascanian traditions during past centuries, themselves replacing the Dundorfian influence that had dominated Malivia in the past, and both thoroughly condemned by the new state. 

Kalo Śukar, the leader of Amaro Drom and who came to power during the coup, has had his authority formalized under the newly established office of the Rom Baro (literally "Great Man"), a traditional title used among nomadic Manoush, primarily in Artania, but virtually unheard of in Malivia itself. Historically the Rom Baro is the leader of one of the nomadic Manoush tribes (vitsya), elected for life and responsible for upholding Manušipen and acting as a liaison with Gadjo authorities. Though a traditional Rom Baro serves for life, he is subject to oversight by the kris, a tribal court, and may even be deposed for crimes against the Manušipen. Malivia's Rom Baro will suffer no such restrictions. Claiming himself a saviour of sorts of Malivia's Manoush, Kalo Śukar enjoys absolute unchecked power, with an authority that goes far beyond anything prescribed in Manoush culture. This dictatorial takeover, while celebrated by those discontent with the dysfunctional and decentralized socialism of the Federation of Councils, is not without its critics. Though opposition to the new regime is being repressed, it is clear that not all Malivians welcome this new ultranationalist regime. Apart from the Gadjo minorities, targets of the State's ire, many non-Kavlari Manoush also find their specific traditions sidelined by the government's promotion of what it perceives as "pure" Manušipen. The Lalé minority specifically, due to its use of a language other than Manoush, instead speaking the Selucian-influenced Laló language, have expressed concern that their language and traditions may find themselves suppressed under the new order. So far, however, open dissent has been sporadic and limited. That may change should the government continue to uphold its hardline stance.

Nation Stands Strong amid Unrest and Propaganda

On Monday morning, a group of individuals gathered around the Malivian Parliament, chanting slogans against the nation and the government. Although some social media posts erroneously claimed that the demonstrators numbered in the millions, the Ministry of Home Affairs has firmly rejected these exaggerated figures, describing them as an attempt to fuel unrest by sensationalizing the situation. The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of the common people and the nation, stressing that the protesters were not substantial in number.

In a press conference, the President strongly condemned the demonstrations, warning the protesters:

These pseudo‑protesters are a threat to the unity and spirit of our beloved nation. They have fallen prey to foreign capital and propaganda. We shall not allow anyone to undermine our beautiful country and its people.

A party spokesperson accused the protesters of betraying the nation and its citizens, calling on party members to resist the evil forces on the streets.

Meanwhile, reports have emerged of clashes between protesters and police in several provinces. Authorities, however, have assured the public that the situation remains under control.

In these turbulent times, we as the national newspaper remain committed to delivering the truth and exposing all forms of propaganda.

The Malivian State in 5739; Where is the country at?

For decades, Malivia has been under a period of relative quiet. Ever since the 5643 Coup, the country has been firmly ruled by the right wing nationalist, and autocratic, Amaro Drom (Our Way). While largely being isolationist in global affairs, much less Artanian affairs or regional affairs, this isolationism has started to bite the country as the economy has, for quite some time faced a period of stagnation. The so called Lost Decade (5730-present) has seen the harshest of economic downturn for the Malivian State. Over the decade, protests and strikes have been common (as has unemployment) but overall, they've been contained or countered enough to not threaten the government of Trisoka Nandi, the current Rom Baro (literally "Great Man") of Malivia. However, such authoritarian measures can only go so far. Within the Amaro Drom, there has been pressure for some form of economic stimulus to try to revitalize the economy, as the balance of power remains quite fragile. Too fragile. All can take for the house of cards established is another economic downturn and suddenly, the protests will escalate as the unemployment lines get longer.

Internally, the Amaro Drom has been torn between maintaining the status quo and embracing mild reforms to ensure economic recovery, and counter unemployment and stagnation. However with the country's isolation, and lack of taking advantage of the Migrants Pass, reforms would have to see an end of isolationism and some integration into the wider global market. However, economic downturn isn't the only issue as the Amaro Drom has, for decades, pursued Manoush nationalism, which has only deteriorated relations between ethnic groups in the country.

With various issues affecting the Malivian State, many within Amaro Drom are throwing their lot in with Reformists, hoping to eke out a majority in the Amaro Drom Congress later this year before the economy takes another nosedive. After all, an unpopular government is only tolerated if the economy is good. And the Malivian economy has been anything but good. It's been hanging on by threads. 

It's no secret that public discontent has been slowly rising due to the lackluster economy. Amongst the plethora of protests, there have been one uniting factor behind them all. Calls for reform and democracy. The calls for some form of democratization and ending autocratic rule has only been growing steadily over the decade, and because of the Lost Decade, many Malivians have found it hard to support the current regime. Still, with the economy hanging on, there isn't a total absence of loyalty. Not yet at least.

Reformists secure narrow majority in Amaro Drom Congress; Trisoka Nandi replaced by Surakrit Bhate, who pledges moderate reforms.

The 5739 Amaro Drom Congress has resulted in a very narrow victory for the Reformist wing of the party. However, with such a razor thin margin (and tacit support from special interest groups within the party), the Reformists within Amaro Drom have decided to not waste their newly found political capital by nominating a radical reformist as Party Chairman, but instead offering a reformist who is fairly moderate. One Satyashri Anagal, a prominent economist within the party, who has been a strong, vocal advocate for economic reforms. Being nominated as the new Party Chairman, Anagal has sought to move the party against Trisoka Nandi, successfully pushing for his replacement, Surakrit Bhate, a firm party loyalist, and reformist.

With the rest of Amaro Drom (reluctantly) behind the reformists, and subsequently behind Bhate, he has pledged a focus on economic modernizations and moderate reform. His two flagship policies, "Punargathan" (Reorganization), and "Navin Arthashastra" (New Economics) are intended to, not only revitalize the economy but ensure that Amaro Drom doesn't nosedive in popularity, and ensure controlled opposition to maintain popularity. For example, Navin Arthashastra is largely focused on economics reforms, as Amaro Drom maintains much of its non Idelogical appeal from economics and with the Lost Decade being fresh in the minds of the youth, the regimes stability is.. conditional most often. Punargathan however, is focused on moderate political and social reforms, looking to trim the worst excesses of authoritarianism, Manoush  Nationalism, and even some independent opposition (strictly in the form of Independents however as the monopoly on power Amaro Drom has is non negotiable).

Conservatives within Amaro Drom have had a plethora of reactions, ranged from muted endorsements, to concern over liberalism, to even plausibly deniable condemnations. The wider public however, has reacted positively to the prospect of reforms, most especially the Student Movements (who, among the Malivian Democratic League, have been the most vocal for economic and political reforms) and the slowly growing unemployment lines. However, the big question will be if the reforms can succeed, as if they can, the Malivian State may very well see itself survive for a century more. But if Conservatives in Amaro Drom get too impatient with the reforms, the possibility of trying to turn against the Party Chairman and Bhate is always there. Colloquially, the Student Movements and the wider Democrat Movement can always spike in popularity as patience with Amaro Drom dries up if the reforms don't produce enough tangible results to the populace.

The first phase of Navin Arthashastra begins; Restructuring the economy.

Navin Arthashastra has been something viewed with curiosity by Amaro Drom. For some, it meant mild improvements to the economy. To others, it meant economic liberalizations. To Surakrit Bhate however, the goal of Navin Arthashastra is to restructure and create a new economy. With the rest of the party largely behind him, Bhate has found little opposition to his reforms as even the most diehard conservatives are willing to accept some of the mild reforms from Navin Arthashastra to repair the economy. As such, the first step to that, is reducing regulations on small business. Family businesses, small manufacturers, restaurants and retail, independent craftsmen, professional services and even tech start ups are to be supported and recognized. To compliment this, applications will be streamlined, local governments will handle permits, and licensing will be standardized.

The goal is to ensure economic growth benefits the people. Largely out of a desire to purchase loyalty but not everyone is that cynical in Amaro Drom. Furthermore, the Maliviyan National Bank will be responsible for issuing low interest loans, start up financing, manufacturing assistance, and agricultural modernization loans. The time for a purely controlled economy has passed, and if Maliviya is to survive, it must embrace some aspects of global capitalism. To promote domestic employment with these new small businesses, tax breaks will be offered for newly established businesses, and hiring unemployed workers will yield tax credits. 

These are only the first steps, but it's a controlled introduction to managed capitalism for Maliviya. If the country is to survive, it must sacrifice ideological purity for progress and development. Lest the Malivian Democratic League starts gaining more ground in the court of public opinion.

Agricultural Reforms begin in Malivia; An effort to keep the countryside loyal.

As Navin Arthashastra continues on, Amaro Drom has always branded itself as a populist party (even if it is authoritarian and anti democratic), a populist party that prioritizes the rural common folk over the urban elite. However, over the years, rural economies have fallen behind considerably compared to their urban counterparts. Now with economic reforms occuring, the conversation has opened for potential rural reforms to keep rural economies alive, and keep support in the countryside. As such, Bhate has signaled intents to begin proper rural redevelopment. The first step is a nation wide effort to improve water management. New reservoirs, irrigation canals, pumping stations, groundwater management, and rural water infrastructure are keystone projects being enacted to support the countryside.

For the biggest rural industry, agriculture however, more must be done. While it's certainly expensive, mechanisation of the agricultural industry must occur. As such, farmers will be allowed to rent tractors, harvesters, seed drills, irrigation equipment and fertilizer spreaders from the state. Alongside this, providing low interest seasonal loans and equipment financing. 

To improve wider countryside support and economic development however, a focus has been shifted on expanding rural electrification and infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, grain storages, and the like. While many view this as a cynical attempt to maintain rural loyalty to Amaro Drom, it's been welcomed by rural communities across Maliviya. Politically however, Bhate has essentially put a bandaid on the worse of the bleeding, as rural communities face widespread problems. Something that makes more radical elements more appealing to Malivians who oppose the Malivian Democratic League and Amaro Drom. Whatever the case, conservatives within the party have largely kept support of Bhate and his reforms for the time being, but have warned that neglecting rural communities in favour of "urban elites" will only cause more problems for Maliviya in the future. But until then, rural communities can celebrate for receiving some support after so long of none.

Punargathan begins as Bhate looks to civil service reform: A war against corruption.

For as long as Maliviya has been under control by Amaro Drom, the civil service has been defined by what Amaro Drom wants, instead of actual practices. However, when Bhate assumed power, he pledged reforms. Both to the economy, and to the government. One such program has been Punargathan (Reorganization). Punargathan would see reforms to how the government works, to make it more efficient, effective and responsive. And the first step to that, is reforming the civil service and, as Bhate has said, "saving the Malivian State from corruption".

As such, as per decree, Bhate has authorized the formation of the National Anti-Corruption Committee, a quasi independent body that will focus on exposing corruption within the government. Whether it be bribery, embezzlement, abuse of office, procurement fraud, nepotism, or illegal enrichment, the NACC will ensure corruption is rooted out of Maliviya. Alongside this, to "ensure that Amaro Drom represents the people and not foreign elites", senior officials within the party have been forced to disclose their assets publicly, such as property, investments, businesses and major financial assets. Furthermore, the civil service will be reformed to promote competence and merits, instead of strict loyalty. Civil servants will now require exams, performance reviews and professional training. 

Reformists within Amaro Drom have applauded the reforms, as it'll finally allow the party to modernize itself alongside Maliviya. Conservatives have reacted less positively, with some fearing that these reforms risk hurting Amaro Drom more than it helps, but these concerns have been muted so far. The wider public has been supportive of these reforms, however, and it gives the Malivian Democratic League one less issue to use against the Amaro Drom dictatorship.
