Potential Name Change for Medina
#1
As the title suggests I am thinking of possibly changing the name of Medina to something new. I don't particularly like the name and this would come in the wake of a communist revolution, so they'd have some sort of reason for wanting this change. I'm not entirely convinced this is a good idea either, so I'd like to hear some opinions.

Hey Sparkteze, this is my opinion as Zanz the player, and does not represent the views of the full mod team.

I think that name changes can be very disruptive to the game - players who played there before used that name, and so RP references it. If you change the name, it becomes difficult to search for content related to the country, it becomes necessary to update wikis, etc.

Because of these difficulties and because we want to respect RP that has come before us, generally speaking I'd want a better reason than "I just don't like it much." You can choose where to play, and if nation name is very important to you, you could play elsewhere. If you changed the name and then left the country, now everyone after you is impacted.

I don't see any problem with your communist regime in character (IC) trying to change the name. You could have a lot of great RP around it - how do people in Medina react to these efforts to change the name? How does your government respond to international nations / entities if they use the name "Medina" and not the name the government wants them to use? This has happened a few times and can be very interesting.

I personally would ask that if you don't have better reasons for it, pursuing a true nation name change is probably not the right path.

I agree with Zanz here that, while I am personally sympathetic to not liking a country's name, simply not liking it is not a very strong justification for changing it entirely.

As has been discussed in the Discord chat on this topic, I think the most reasonable solution in such a case is to change the formal name of the country to something fitting the ideological characteristics of the state in Medina which you are creating (i.e. the People's Republic of Medina, the Socialist Republic of Medina, etc.), as this has typically been the practice.

I'm echoing the thoughts shared by both Zanz and Wu and will say that this is not going to attract much approval.

Thanks for the feedback, I believe I'll stick to using Medina then. It's actually started to grow on me a bit more now.
