Wiki (Operations, Feedback, Help)

Hi all,

A while back, a conversation began again on the Discord about moving ourselves away from the Fandom wiki to a more modern wiki infrastructure.

In consultation with Greek, Mbites, and Nick, myself, jamescfm and Auditorii have taken the first steps toward making that happen.

FOR NOW, the new Miraheze wiki lives at https://classicrp.miraheze.org. You are free to register here and begin editing as you like. Eventually, this wiki will be hosted at a subdomain of prtcy.com itself (e.g. wiki.prtcy.com) but no timeline on that yet.

Key questions we can anticipate:

• Q: Will the old wiki be imported over?
  
• A: No, not in bulk. Imports require support from Miraheze staff and several times we have had struggles with this process. It will be faster to just not do it. Our position is that the old wiki is generally very bloated anyway, and this represents a fresh start to go along with the move to the new forum, Legacy, etc.
  
  
• Q: Can I port individual pages myself?
  
• A: Mostly. There is no visual editor on Miraheze, so you have to do it using Source editing. On Fandom, on a wiki page, hover over the three dots in the top right of a wiki. Choose Edit Source. Copy the source, and then paste that into the Miraheze editor. PLEASE USE PREVIEW to check that things are going to look OK when you paste over. Many Fandom pages use templates that are non-standard and will look bad if you don't do significant editing. It may be easier to rewrite some pages than try to make copy-pasta work. Please ask for help if you need help.
  
  
• Q: Who are the technical admin users of the wiki (e.g. who can theoretically help answer wiki questions?)
  
• A: Jamescfm, Zanz, Farsun/Auditorii, GreekIdiot, Mbites, TheNick. Any game mods / admins will be given wiki privileges as well.
  
  
• Q: Why is theoretically italicized?
  
• A: This is a volunteer position, and not all of us have much experience with wiki software or best practices. Please be patient and don't expect everyone to know everything. Zanz and Auditorii have the most technical experience with wikis.
  
  
• Q: I can't edit categories or templates, why?
  
• A: These were key areas of bloat on the Fandom wiki and we're going to be much more selective allowing editing on the new wiki. If you think you should have access to edit these please reach out to the people named above and we can discuss, but note that most people will NOT be given these privileges just because generally you probably don't need a new template or category when you think you do.
  
  
• Q: I need a new template added, help?
  
• A: First, check https://classicrp.miraheze.org/wiki/Category:Templates and particularly https://classicrp.miraheze.org/wiki/Cate..._templates . You probably have what you need already. Next, check a page similar to what you're making (e.g. if you're making a nation page, check out another nation page like https://classicrp.miraheze.org/wiki/Jelbe ; if you're making a city check out a city page like https://classicrp.miraheze.org/wiki/Kamalata ; check out categories like https://classicrp.miraheze.org/wiki/Category:Cildania to find a bunch of various types of pages. Please try to mimic these styles and use templates from them).
  
  
• Q: I made a page and Zanz moved or renamed it, what gives?
  
• A: As may be apparent from above, we have strong opinions on the value of an orderly, consistent wiki. We reserve the right to move and rename articles, categorize, merge, etc., to promote a uniform wiki which we've never really had with Fandom. We may do this often, we may do this infrequently, depends on our availability - don't take it personally, and feel free to reach out with questions or concerns.
