Cultural Protocol update for Malivia - no more two Indias
#1
I've been thinking of a way to address the current situation where there are two different nations in Particracy both based on India, namely Vascania and Malivia. Both of them have had an Indian culture for some time, so in theory there is not much that can be done about it. I've tried to address this issue before by making Malivia the ultimate origin of Vascania's culture via a medieval thalassocracy, and to further differentiate them I've made Sanskrit Malivia's main language, but this remains an unsatisfactory solution and does not sufficiently differentiate the two cultures. As an alternative I've come up with the idea of making Malivia a Roma nation. This has the advantage of keeping an ultimately Indian origin for Malivia while integrating it within the cultural context of Artania and Malivia's Majatran neighbours. Another advantage is making use of a RL culture that is not really represented in PT (the last time the Manoush were used was in Dolgava around 2012/2013), and thankfully Romani is now on Google Translate. The one major downside is that IRL most Roma use the naming conventions of the dominant languages of the countries they live in, but that can be fixed by creating a list of names derived from or adapted to the Romani language.

The historical background could be that the Manoush originated in Vascania and arrived in Majatra as nomads, where they were used as mercenaries by the Augustan Empire, and after its fall by the Caliphate, who used the Manoush to conquer Malivia, where most of them settled. With the fall of the Caliphate Malivia became independent, and over time many Dundorfians settled and eventually took power in the 19th century, until they were overthrown.

I was thinking of dividing the Malivian Manoush into 3 main subgroups (based on the main current divisions within the Roma ethnicity). The dominant would be based on the Kalderash and others who speak Vlax Romani, then there would be the Iberian Romani along the coast neighbouring Selucia, and the smallest of them would be the partially Dundorfianized Sinti. As for religion, I think we should get rid of Geraja from Malivia altogether. The wiki article for Geraja is very outdated, with the last substantial update dating from 2006, and though it has been used in RP, I think that can be easily retconned.

I've come up with the following draft for a CP update. The names of the new ethnic groups are provisional, as is everything else really. I am opening this to community feedback. Is this worth pursuing or is it a terrible nonsensical idea?

--OVERVIEW--

Malivia is based primarily on Roma and Sinti culture.

--ETHNICITY--

» Manoush (Roma): 73%
-- Kovlari (Vlax Romani/Kalderash): 42%
-- Lalé (Calé/Gitanos): 23%
-- Shukari (Sinti/Manouche): 8%
» Dundorfian (German): 7%
» Yeudi (Jewish): 6%
» Narik (Dutch): 5%
» Selucian (Roman): 4%
» Other: 5%

--RELIGION—

» Hosianism (Christianity): 71%
-- Augustan (Orthodox): 29%
-- Aurorian (Catholic): 27%
-- Charismic (Pentecostal): 10%
-- Other: 5%
» Irreligious: 10%
» Ahmadism (Islam): 8%
» Yeudism: 6%
» Other: 5%

--LANGUAGE--

Manoush (Romani) is the most widely spoken language in Malivia; it is divided into numerous dialects that are not mutually intelligible, and the largest of these is Kovlari (Vlax Romani) which also serves as Malivia’s official language. Lalé (Calé) speak the Laló language (Caló), a mixed language with heavy Selucian influence. Many Shukari speak Dundorfian (German) or Narik (Dutch).

I am in favor of this proposal and believe it will help make the southern Dovani region make a bit more sense, as well. With Vascania as the specific home for Indian history in Terra, we have to stretch credibility less to have Indian influence in places like Yerrawa, SoDo, etc.

Good work.

I am strongly in favour of this proposal, particularly given the reason provided by Zanz. See also my proposal for retconning Indian religion generally.

Generally speaking I think the ideas are reasonable and make sense if considering that we want to mirror real-life developments or would want to "equalize" represented culture distribution. However for me personally the explanations/justifications provided do not suffice for my agreeing to basically scrap all previous Malivian RP and retcon the entire demographic make-up of the Malivia "Slot."

I fully support this move. It is senseless to think that Indian culture originated in Artania and that Vascania was made Indian.

I believe it is best for Vascania to be the Indian nation and make Malivia the Roma and Sinti nation. I object to Mbites saying that this would retcon their entire RP, I very much doubt it will. And even if it did we need this for good world building.
