Sulekoto - Following months of bitter fighting major combat operations have ceased in Northern Nsanlosa after the signing of the Sulekoto Accords. The accords formally end the fighting between the MDN transitional government and the KLF in Kagba, reintergrating Kagba into the newly declared Nsanian Federation. The new constitution of the Federation was signed into effect through the Sulekoto Accords, allowing the transitional authorities to start preparation for the first democratic elections to be held on two months time.
The fighting between the two sides has left at least 4500 Nsanian's dead, compared to around 2200 Kagbans. It was heaviest in areas outside of Kagba, where MDN forces tried to expell the KLF from its positions. After a breakthrough by MDN forces the fall of Sulekoto itself was imminent, prompting the KLF to come to the negotiating table. Negotiations were merged into overall talks on a new constitution, which has now resulted in the creation of the Federation.
Under the new federation, Kagba will be granted status as a seperate Republic, electing its own State President, parliament and local government and also gaining extensive rights to govern itself. Only on matters of defense, monetary policy, inter-federation trade and foreign policy does the new republic not gain any powers. Meanwhile the remaining 9 regional entities will be transformed into provinces, with the exception of Haradesa which will be governed as a Capital Territory.
The provinces will also gain extensive self-governance under the new constitution, stepping away from unitary politics under the Hodari regime. On the federal level, the new to be created Federal Assembly and Federal Senate will serve as the legislatures of the federation. The Assembly is to be elected under a FPTP system using single member districts, while the Senate will represent the 10 entities making up the federation, with all electing two senators regardless of population. The presidential office will lose almost all its executive power, with that power instead transferred to the office of Prime Minister, elected by the Assembly.
Under this system, the Transitional Authorities hope to divide power and prevent another Hodari regime from taking office. But while fighting between the MDN and KLF has stopped, several minor rebel factions continue to prevent a proper functioning of government throughout Nsanlosa. At the Istapalian border the situation isnt much better, as continious border clashes between the two sides has led to hundreds of deaths and growing anomosity between the two neighbours.
While many expect these challenges to persist, the first elections under the new constitution are scheduled to be held in two months time. In this first election, Presidential and legislative elections will be held simultaniously, seeking to fill all executive positions and transition away from the current interim administration.
