Nsanlosa - Since the election last year at least 20 members of parliament have been killed in numerous incidents throughout the country. The Home Office reported the fact in its first report on the state of the country, painting a grim picture for a country plagued by corruption, poverty and ongoing violence.
In its report, the Home Office recorded 12 instances in which members of parliament were killed by rival tribes following their election, largely caused by fueds originating from the Hodari era. In the other 8 deaths the MP was either killed by local militias and gangs or the cause of death was undertermined. In all cases the MP's were replaced by a provincially appointed replacement, with no changes in the makeup of parliament reported.
While the death of elected officials is the most remarkable part of the report it is certainly not the worst. The Home Office paints a bleak picture of the state of the country, with thousands being forced to flee ongoing violence throughout the country, millions living in extreme poverty and the corrupt systems of power established under President Hodari breaking apart, in turn causing its own wave of corruption and lawlessness. The report estimates that only 31% of the country is under "full government control", with another 48% "contested" and the remaining 21% being considered "controlled by third parties".
The situation at the Istapalian border is the worst. While Istapalian revolutionaries have so far failed to capture Nsanian territory, their continious attempts have left thousands of villages and townships in ruin. Soldiers of the newly established Federal Border Security Bureau (FBSB) have been accused of extortion, leaving border communities to turn against the federal and local government. An estimated 1 million Nsanians have fled the border region, moving inland in a attempt to flee the violence.
All the instability and a weak government have led to some of the worst poverty numbers in Dovani, with the report estimating that nearly 48% of the Nsanian population lives in "extreme poverty" and another 20% living in "moderate poverty". These numbers could be even worse, as the Home Office was unable to properly assess the situation. GDP has shrunk from 200 billion just years ago, to just 39 billion now. Services are breaking down even further and in most of the country "the government is not considered to even exist."
Prime Minister Ramadhani has called the report "a shocking reminder on the state of our country and the challenges ahead" and has called on the international community for aid.
The GPC government under Ramadhani has just last week finalized its plans to push back against the tide, seeking to garner international financial and humanitarian support and using it to stabilize the country. But with a worsening security environment, Nsanlosa has now entered a death spiral. Tourism at the lush coastal destinations has dried up completely, while other sectors are barely holding on. A plan banking completely on outside support, experts say, might be doomed to fail without a drastic shift in the security situation within the country.
