"The capital of the People must return to the People!" - Demands grow to move Capital to Mainland from Atyr as income inequality and accusations of a "walled city" arises in La Tondelle
Protests have begun to mount in the capital of the United Kingdom over the fallout of the MontRouge scandal. As was revealed last week, incumbent PM Jean-Luc Riqueti was shown to have taken illicit bribes and financial transactions by the massive MontRouge mineral extraction conglomerate to grant them preferential rights in land deals and regulations under the purview of the government-controlled Ministère des Affaires foncières. Riqueti has resigned in disgrace and been replace by acting PM and former vice-minister Lorraine Blondeau. However, Blondeau has not commented on the growing calls for a snap election or committed to a thorough prosecution of the individuals in question following the initial investigation and findings of whistleblowers. The extant ruling party Federation Canrille (FC), which both Riqueti and Blondeau belong to, has been considered the dominant party for decades in the Kanjorian political system, but election after election opposition factions have been gaining ground.
The people's gripes weren't merely with Riqueti and his accomplices, but how the perceived seclusion of the capital from the suffering and activities of ordinary citizens have led to a detachment from public affairs or service. Of the MontRouge scandal, bribes included luxury yacht trips taken by PM Riqueti through the straight and out of Atyr harbor. They were negotiated by the much-maligned and despised professional political lobbying and business interest class in Atyr, who compromise a small elite class behind the decisions of the PM and the Senate.
This is all despite the fact that Atyr and La Tondelle have a much smaller population compared to the three provinces of the mainland, who house the vast majority of the national population. The seclusion of Atyr has stoked the anger of Kanjor's people to the point where many now believe there could be a political revolution.
With chants of " la capitale du peuple, pour le peuple!", chants have grown across the country as the opposition call on the government to not only hold new elections, but a referendum to move the national capital.
Central to the protest movement is Senatorial candidate Henri Boudon, who called on the government to embrace transparency and move away from "the walled city of hoarded gold and lies". Boudon and his Hosian Democrat party, the second largest party in the Senate and the leader of the opposition, have cast themselves as champions of a Hosianist strain of "classical liberalism" and republicanism. Arguing that democratic government demands the consent of the people and rule for the people, Boudon's campaign has decried the corruption and seclusion of Atyr as emblematic of "monarchist tyranny" and misrule of the masses. The most recent opinion polls show extreme rises in Hosian Democrat support against what many see as a corrupt and failing ancien regime; if the elections were held today, some estimate that over 60% of the vote could swing Hosian Democrat.
In general, the denizens of La Tondelle are typically much poorer than the mainland and belong to working class and minority, typically Willitu, communities. Because the local economy is based mainly in resource extraction, the average resident is much poorer and less educated than the residents of the capital, increasingly suffering by the spike in local prices and property driven by the gentrification of Atyr's urban sprawl. Many see Atyr's current gated existence as an increasing stain on the country's democratic values, reinforcing class divides. Protestors argue that the move of key government institutions and the legislature to the mainland, where most people live and can reach their leaders, will promote greater scrutiny, transparency, and accountability for the administration.
Nonetheless, the united front calling for a capital change are disparate. There is a noticeable divide between national populists on the mainland calling for the shift of the capital, who typically represent a Republican strain of Canrillaise ethnic Kanjorien right wing politics. Meanwhile, their insular allies on La Tondelle are typically working class indigenous and mixed, tending to vote for the left. These interests will have to be negotiated internally if the movement hopes to succeed.
If the national capital were to change, most protestors see the city of Marchatel as the ideal new location. Located as a central transportation hub on the mainland, being a large commercial and industrial center near the economically critical border with Aldurie, Marchatel is the most populated city in the nation. Some like Senator Jean-Christophe Courtet have proposed Nasbourg as an alternative capital in a bid to increase the regional visibility of Martois, which remains a strong candidate, but it is likely that Marchatel will become the new capital.
It is unknown whether the central government will acquiesce to the growing calls to move the capital, but momentum is rapidly growing.

Hosian Democrats, Institutional Unionists announce Republican grand coalition, promise to return the capital to Marchâtel
The Hosian Democrat Party and the Institutional Unionist Party have announced a grand coalition to participate in the new legislative elections against the incumbent Federation Canrille (FC) government of Lorraine Blondeau. PM Blondeau, who was widely criticized for her perceived failures to punish past members of the disgraced and corrupt Riqueti administration or address the anti-Atyr protests, has seen record low approval ratings as the mood of national politics swings heavily in favor of anti-corruption campaigns and capital relocation.
A central promise of the campaign is the two parties' shared commitment to initiate the transfer of the capital from the obscure and secluded city of Atyr, located on the island of La Tondelle, to the bustling economic hub of Marchatel on the mainland in Numineux and near Aldurie. Marchatel boasts the highest population of any Kanjorian city and is considerably more accessible to the majority of the population residing on the Kanjorian mainland. This alongside the city's outstanding cultural and historical legacy have made it the proclaimed candidate of the Grand Coalition, who have chosen it to replace Atyr.
In one of the most important political developments of the century, the Grande coalition pour la République has also explicitly stated that it will embark on the political mission of transforming the United Kingdom into a Republic, taking their potential electoral victory as a mandate of Republican transition if it comes to pass. This will entail the formal end of the monarchy and the rule of the House of Orléans-Vasser-DeChambeau. It will also initiate the beginning of a Constitutional Convention and the additional election of deputies to a body tasked with the creation of the new supreme law of the land. Though Kanjor will remain in the Canrille Union alongside Lourenne, the Grand Coalition also declared that it would seek increased national autonomy for Kanjor.
To stave off the grand coalition, the FC party has promised that it will curb "populism" and continue to run a fiscally responsible administration that pursues "rational governance". Dismissing the Grand Coalition's ideologies as extremist and a terrible mistake that will end centuries of enduring royalist and monarchical governance, the FC is positioning itself as the "sane" and stable party on the ballot that will provide reliable and responsible governance. Effectively, the election has become not only a clash over the capital, but of the survival of the Monarchy as some call for the rebirth of the Republic.
Voters will head to the polls on June 1, 5720 to decide whether or not the United Kingdom can survive the onslaught of popular disapproval in the monarchical system and the island-capital model of governance.

Raising his hand on the steps of the Legislative Palace in Marchâtel, citoyen president promised to defend the liberties and rights of all free and equal citizens of the Kanjorian republic. In sharp contrast to the muted and insular elite coronations of former kings and queens, a jubilant energy filled the air as the newly sworn-in president proceeded to meet citizens and appear publicly all across Marchâtel.
Having been returned to the rule of the people, Kanjor embarks upon a new political age.

Socialist Republicans seek to court center-left defectors in runup to Election as Hosian Dems signal rightward shift
Self-described liberal Renaud Solé made history this January when he trounced long-favored centrist candidate and incumbent Vice-President Timothée Chagnon in the Hosian Democratic presidential primary, pulling off largest electoral upset in recent Kanjorian history. Although Chagnon, already being the trusted vice and right hand man of beloved incumbent president Boudon, was thought to have already sinched the party's nomination, Solé's energetic and charged campaign was enough to grasp victory from the jaws of defeat.
Being seen by many as a big-tent party of centrists, Solé's victory signals a major shift in ushering in the potential rule of the party's right wing pro-business faction. Solé ran on a center-right platform promoting aggressive tax cuts and liberalization of key industries. This contrasted with Chagnon's centrist "old guard" policies of continuing to run a mixed economy and to increase public spending. Exit polls indicate that Chagnon maintained a "boring" factor throughout the primary campaign that hurt him. Vice president Chagnon, who is pushing 70 and was chosen by President Boudon mainly for his legitimacy and longtime public service, is also seen as too old by younger voters. This contrasted sharply with the energetic charisma of 34-year old Solé, who promised to rule for the new generations.
Seeing inner division in the Hosian Democratic party and the disillusion of that party's center and left factions, the Socialist Republican Party (PSR) have put out press statements calling on "all dissatisfied Kanjorians" to vote SocRep. However, SocRep representatives in the National Coillot were already shaken last year by the secession of Edouard Limon's L'Autre Kanjor (The Other Kanjor), and already play in a diminished arena. Before, with Chagnon as presumed Hosian candidate, Socialist Republican prospects were underwhelming with the PSR repeatedly trailing the PDH in the double digits. However, the possible defection of unhappy voters of the PDH may be enough to close the gap.
Undoubtably, the mineral and resource extraction and refinement sectors, which comprise a plurality of Kanjor's national GDP, will likely decide the ultimate winner of the 5725 elections. While rank and file miners have been known to traditionally vote Socialist, the conferral of legitimacy that the Hosian Dems have gained with the popular Boudon administration combined with their preference by mining executives and the middle class will make them a formidable opponent.
Due to the one-term limit for Presidents imposed by the Republican Constitution, popular incumbent Henri Boudon is ineligible to run for this election, and has signaled his desire to return to quiet civilian life as a practicing lawyer upon the expiration of his term.
Vice president Chagnon has not commented on if he will attempt to run as an independent or third-party candidate.

Fmr. President Boudon given tour of completed Palace of Soulon
Former Citoyen President Henri Boudon was met in Marchâtel today by incumbent President Renaud Solé and given a full tour of the newly completed Palace of Soulon (pictured). The palace, under construction for nearly a decade, was deliberately designed in the culturally representative Grande Canrillaise style of architecture. Besides the grand presidential office, it features a tennis court, swimming pool, library, and state reception and council halls necessary for the executive administration of the nation.
Previously the president's temporary inaugural residence and office was a modest converted courthouse building. Presidents Boudon and Solé both used the old office, located at 12 Fraternity Square, which was deemed too small and compromised in security to adequately serve as the residence. Though elaborate and luxurious offices of the old United Kingdom were available to retrofit in the former island capital of Atyr in La Tondelle, both presidents sought instead to create and build a presidential office culturally representative of Kanjor in the midst of the people in their rightful capital on the mainland.
The front arch of the building prominently features a bronze-cast relief starring Lucien Félix Corvin (also known by his traditional Selucian name Lucius Felix Corvinus), the national hero of Kanjor, being blessed by Auspicia, the traditional pagan Goddess of liberty and good fortune. President Boudon expressed his joy and approval at the construction of the new executive building, declaring his wish that it may serve as a beacon of hope and justice to the Kanjorian people.

Kanjor, Rildanor, affirm Fraternal Ties in Canrille despite "Kanjor First" Politics
LE 14 OCTOBRE 5741 - MARCHÂTEL
Today in Marchâtel Kanjor's Citoyen Ministre des Affaires étrangères Augustin Guilloux met Rildanor's Madame la Ministre Sylvie Aimard-Bélanger in a uniform and routine Kanjor-Rildanorien summit. Retaining longstanding and crucial cultural and economic ties with each other, Kanjor and Rildanor both consider each other to have historically had a "special relationship".
Incumbent Citoyen President Mathieu Jacquier of the National Movement has continued to prioritize his appeal to the nation's Kanjorien-Canrillaise communities, but as is characteristic of his party this rhetoric in fact relies on a greater sense of Kanjorian independence and nationalism distinct from the rest of Canrille. This has led some to accuse Citoyen President Jacquier of xenophobia and even anti-Rildanorienisme and anti-Aldurienisme, a label he furiously denies and repudiates. Being Kanjor-First, he insists, does not mean being anti-Canrille.
The more traditionally pro-Canrillaise and unionist Hosian Democratic Party has accused the National Movement of jeopardizing and sabotaging the pan-Canrillaise project. Nonetheless, today's meeting seemed to confirm that, despite nationalist rhetoric, Jacquier has since fallen in line with the traditional pursuit of positive inter-Canrillaise relations as has been a cornerstone of the foreign policy of his predecessors and of Kanjorien institutions. A statement delivered by foreign minister Guilloux to foreign minister Aimard- Bélanger personally from president Jacquier expressed wishes for goodwill and traditional close ties between the two lands. The two nations agreed to continue to maintain communication at the highest levels of government and to recognize their mutual importance. Some have spoke of further economic, military, or even intelligence , but under the present administration's "Kanjor-First" agenda this seems unlikely for now.
Both sides additionally expressed their joint wishes that Aldurie would likewise come to engage with her Sister Republics soon. Renewed activity and dynamism in Canrille may awaken the south Seleyan people once more.
